Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus Humorous Inlay c. 1870s
Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus w/Humorous Porcelain Lid Inlay c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called the “Regensburg” type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. They were produced from the 1850s to the late 1870s. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the mid- to late-1870s. The relief decor in front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. The lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a gentleman drinking from a beer stein while three more and a full barrel are waiting for him to finish. My German is not that good to translate it perfectly, but I guess the point could be recognized. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional cobalt-blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some minor firing lines and other small manufacturing flaws – the pottery was mostly a manual job, – but no damage or repairs whatsoever. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with about 150 years of history behind it. It is quite large and impressive – it stands 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Antique Matching Pair of German Glass Beer Steins withPorcelain Inlays c. 1870s
Antique Matching Pair of German Glass Beer Steins w/Porcelain Inlays c. This very impressive and spectacular matching pair of glass beer steins were made around the 1870s. The steins were mold blown to create molded vertical facets on the inside with stone-cut circles on the outside, creating a beautiful optical effect. They were supplied with applied handles and pewter lids with pictures hand-painted over transfer outlines. They show a man and a woman dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes. Very nicely and precisely painted portraits. The glass (and sometimes stoneware or porcelain) beer steins with porcelain inlays featuring beautiful women were quite common. But here we have two identical steins, but one inlay portrays a woman, another one – a man. Most likely, they were a wedding gift for newlyweds – beer steins were quite expensive at the time and were considered perfect wedding gifts. Two beautiful old drinking vessels in excellent condition and historical and cultural significance! The steins are 5.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.3L capacity. Height: 8.25 in. Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein White Overlay Wheel Cut c. 1870s
Antique German/Bohemian Glass Beer Stein Clear w/White Overlay Wheel Cut c. Description: This beautiful old stein was mouth-blown of crystal glass around the 1870s. The majority of steins of this type were made in German Bohemia – now Czech Republic. It was made using a very complex and labor-intensive technique called “overlay” – a freshly-blown clear glass stein was submerged into a white glass to create a layer of white overlay. It was then stone-cut, creating heart-forming facets that reveal the clear glass surface. The handle is attached the white glass layer and also stone-cut. The lid has a porcelain overlay with a beautiful miniature painting of a couple riding a boat with a musician to entertain them. This is a real hand-painted miniature, not the usual paint over transfer outline. There is a polished-out pontil mark on the bottom. The pewter mounts have a 3-ring open hinge and ornate thumblift – the typical techniques used in the 1870s. The stein is in excellent mint condition. The stein is 6.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Height: 6.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Track Page Views With.
