Antique German Reinhold Merkelbach Lidded Figural Monk Character Beer Stein. 5L
Marked Made in Germany 21 on base. Merkelbach Manufaktur was established in 1843. The founder was Wilhelm Merkelbach whose family pottery traditions had dated bach to 17th century. The pottery was developed by his son Reinhold Merkelbach. After his death the Merkelbach Manufaktur was managed by widow Toska Merkelbach and in 1907 it was overtaken by sons Paul and Reinhold Merkelbach. The sons of Toska Merkelbach died in the WWI. She had to manage the company again in order to save manufactory for her grandson Reinhold Paul Bernhard Merkelbach born in 1918. Professor Reinhold Paul Bernhard Merkelbach took over a factory in 1957. He was a scientist and the factory was run by managers. In 1971 50 percent of the company was bought by W. In 1985 Goebel overtook remaining 50 percent of the downsized company. In 1988 Merkelbach family and a collector and some workers repurchased the factory. Production had to be stopped around 2007 when it became clear that further production of ceramics in Germany was no longer a viable option. German ceramic, figural, 1/2 L, figural head lid. No text on this specimen. Condition and Description: Overall in very good condition, only knocks are a hairline that runs partway through the lid and some glaze loss on the underside of base (exactly as pictured – the hairline is most evident at the edge of the inlay directly above the monk’s right eyebrow). This Majolica Monk is a wonderful character stein, with strong color and great presence – displays incredibly well! Height: 6.6 tall from base to top of thumblift. Width: 3.6 at the base. Antique German Porcelain Character Beer Stein – Monk w/Lithophane by E. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a smiling monk wearing red brown robe. His head forms the lid. It is fully hand-painted – the robe, his face, eyes and lips are hand-painted by a decorating artist. The porcelain character monk is relatively rare – there are many varieties of monk character steins in stoneware and pottery, but this stein is made of porcelain. It has a lithophane picture in the bottom – a picture that you can see against the light. The lithophane presents a picture of a flirting couple. The thumblift is made in form of a lyre – most likely, it was special ordered as a gift for a musician. This monk stein is well-known within the beer stein collectors community. It was once suggested that this stein was made by August Saeltzer, but most recent research disproved it. It is now positively determined that these porcelain monks and nuns were made by Eduard Kick in Amberg. The stein is in excellent condition, with some minimal age-related paint wear.
