Antique German Hauber&Reuther HR Beer Stein Etched #172 w/Unusual Lid dated 1891. The steins produced by HR are ones of the most collectable and desirable for the excellent quality and rarity. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware in combined technique of tapestry and etched. The etched beer stein by HR were of excellent quality compared only to Mettlach. The stein was also hand-touched to accent the details. It depicts a gentleman holding a cat in one hand and pickled herring in another. The tomcat as experience shows. Dies of sour herring. A cat in German drinking culture represents hangover, pickled herring – a cure. The stein has a quite unusual lid – it was made by Bernsdorfer Metlawork. Just a good example of people trying to find better lid systems than the tradional pewter ones. The stein is dated 10/31/1891 on the lid. Please note the the etched tapestry-type steins by HR doesn’t come up very often. It is in excellent flawless condition, there are no chip nor cracks. This stein is an excellent hand painted piece with pewter lid, adorned with Imperial German imagery. The front shows Wilhelm the 2nd and two very high ranking men with an iron cross. The left side shows a cavalryman on horseback, accepting flowers from a young maiden. The right side shows many cavalrymen mounted, and ready to charge into glorious battle The back is very simple, with the images stretching almost completely around. The handle has a rather simple design painted onto it. The bottom shows a KR Germany stamp, as well as hand painted in German. The lid ornament has a cavalry officer ready to charge, with the thumb lever a Bavarian lion holding up the state’s crest. There is a lithophane present in the bottom of this stein.
