Antique German Glass Beer Stein Parian Sculptural Lid Young Bacchus c1860s
Antique German Glass Beer Stein Porcelain Sculptural Lid – Young Bacchus c. Description: This beauti ful and impressive beer stein was molded of crystal glass creating beautiful oval-shaped facets for the perfect optical effect. This stein was made in around mid- to late 1860s. The lid is made o f pewter with a biscuit porcelain inlay featuring a sculptural figure of a young boy with a bunch of grapes. This is most likely an image of young Bacchus – the Greek god of wine making, fertility and festivity. He was quite often portrayed as an infant with grapes. This type of biscuit porcelain material is called “Parian” – it was invented in 1840s in England and quickly became very popular in Germany and also in the United States. Parian ware was utilized mainly for busts and figurines, and occasionally for dishes and small vases. The main advantage of Parian ware was that it could be molded as regular porcelain but then carved like marble to create very precise detailing. It was still too expensive for mass production so it became quite rare after 1870s. Th e stein is in excellent condition. There is some wear and scratching consistent with minimal age-re lated wear, but no chips, lines or repairs. The figurine on top has no flaws. Please note – despite the shaft showing on the side of the hinge, it is still closed type – the shaft is not moving when you move the lid. These closed type large five-ring hinges are a perfect sign of pre-1870s production.. It is 7 to the top of the Bacchus head , 0.3L capacity. Condition: Very good – some age-related wear. Late 1 86 0s. Materials: Crystal glass, parian lid. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Attention Sellers – Get Templates Image Hosting, Scheduling at Auctiva. Track Page Views With.
