Antique German Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid- Bowling Theme #1087 c. 1900
Large Antique Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid – Bowling Theme #1087 c. Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made in the “etched” technique that is usually associated with Mettlach. However, it was made by Matthias Girmscheid – one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900s Germany. He established his own company in 1870 in Hoehr, now – Hoehr-Grenzhausen, the famous Westerwald stein-making area. The stein is made of pottery in an etched technique with hand-painted coloring. The design is quite interesting. The central medallion shows a man with a bowling ball ready to deliver. The side panels show people drinking in a tavern and saluting the bowler. Ein wack’rer Mann der kegeln kann. It’s a brave man who can bowl. Des Kegelspeil gibt Freuden viel. Bowling gives much happiness. The lid is made of ceramics without a framing pewter ring. This is typical for Girmscheid. It shows bowling pins and a bowl with the inscription Alle Neun! , the motto of the sport of bowling. The German version of bowling – Kegeln – was 9 pin game. This is a large stein measuring 10.25 tall with a capacity of 1 L. It is marked with the word “Germany” and model number 1087. The stein is in excellent flawless condition with only minimal paint wear. Condition: Excellent w/minor wear. Height: 10.25 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique German Etched Beer Stein by J. P. Thewalt Drinking Cavaliers #1296 c. 1900
Antique German Etched Beer Stein Drinking Cavaliers by Johann Peter Thewalt #1296 c. Description: This beautiful very old German beer stein is made in “etched” technique – the contours of the decoration are incised into the body. This technique was used by different manufacturers around the turn of the 19th century – the most famous was Mettlach, but also J. Remy, Hauber and Reuther, and some others used it to create very beautiful (and also expensive at the time) exclusive beer vessels. This one was made by Jo hann Peter Th ewalt around early 1900. The scene on the stein shows a group of Renaissance cavaliers drinking in a monastery yard with a monk coming from the cellar offering some more brew. The inscription reads: Ein guter Fund zur rechten Stund. A good find for the right hour. The stein is in excellent condition – no chips, lines or any other damages. The lid is pewter with a ceramic inlay which is also etched with two owls and a glass of wine (a symbol of drinking wisely in this case) and the word Prosit! – To your health! The stein is large and impressive, standing 10 tall, 1 L capacity. Maker: Johann Peter Thewalt. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.
Pair of Antique Early German Stoneware Westerwald Beer Steins c. Late 1700s
Pair of Antique Early German Stoneware Westerwald Beer Steins c. The beer steins made before 1850 fall into the “Early” category in terms of beer stein collecting. They are quite rare – at that time, before the Industrial Revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand, and rarely replicated. These two beautiful steins were made in the 1780s – 1790s, they are guaranteed old give or take 10 years. They were made in a traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. These are very traditional beer-drinking vessels – a type that was produced for centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The steins are decorated with stylized floral decorations. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument. The steins are also glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired, and saltglazed. Both steins have no lids – it looks like they were unlidded from the beginning or the lids were removed at some point. Both steins have no cracks, major chips, or repairs. The stein on the right has a small chip on the upper rim, the one on the left is in excellent condition. The inscriptions on the bottom are the museum notes and inventory numbers from the Schlossmuseum. They could be easily removed if needed. The taller stein is 6″ tall 0.75 L capacity, the other one is 5.5″ tall, 0.5L capacity. Condition: One excellent, one w/small chip. Height: taller 6 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.
