Antique Early German Bohemian Glass Wedding Beer Stein Hand-Blown Engraved c1845
Antique Early German Bohemian Biedermeier Glass Wedding Beer Stein Hand Blown and Engraved dated 1845. A classical German glass beer stein from the period of late Biedermeier 1820s – to 1840s. The beer steins made in pre-industrial period – before 1850 – fall into the “early” category in terms of beer stein collectors. They are highly collectable and quite interesting from the point of view of technology and history. Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle scrolled. Wide pedestal with large pontil mark. The central band is nicely decorated with beautiful engraved decorations, very typical for this period. This type of glass engravings was made with a lathe mounted copper wheels smeared with a grit paste. This is a very old glass decoration technique going back to Babylonian times. It is made with the great skills – a true antique art object. These type of steins (this particular shape and size in the Biedermeier period) are usually called “glass wedding steins” they were mostly made for the wedding gifts and considered a perfect wedding present. They were quite expensive at the time. Excellent flawless condition – a rare occasion for such an item. There are some impurities in the glass – it was a pre-industrial manual glassblowing job, but there is no breaks, chips or repairs. The lid is in perfect condition and sits very tight. It is engraved with the initials C. It features a large closed type hinge and urn-shaped thumblift – typical for the Biedermeier period. Nice very traditional beer drinking vessel about 180 years old! I guarantee my dating – the stein was made in 1845 (or earlier). It is quite large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1 L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.
