Please keep this in mind! It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or “master steins” – large with a bulbous form called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped steins”. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware hand-turned and manually decorated with beautifully and intricately etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with a very unusual teal color glaze. The lid is pewter with the acorn thumblift and five-ring closed-type hinge with an ornate handle support. This types of hinge and thunblift were the most common from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name: J. There is also a massive footring. The stein is in excellent condition for the age – there are no chips or cracks. There are some minor glaze crazing and manufacturing impurities due to the pre-industrial manual manufacturing technology.
