Antique RARE 1700’s Westerwald German Salt-Glazed Stoneware Sgraffito Stein Pewter Lid Jug, Tankard 2-Liter. For your consideration is an EARLY, RARE and UNUSUAL large lidded jug or stein, made of thick salt-glazed stoneware. Original pewter lid, hinged and with a globular finial (thumb piece). Attached handle, shaped spout. Scratched (Sgraffito) ornamentation all around the body in repeating linear and dot patterns (scarce and quite uncommon Folk Art embellishments). A cobalt blue handwritten “2” marking near the handle, indicating the capacity – 2 Liters. All original, mid/late 1700’s. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN THE PAGE FOR MORE PHOTOS! 13″ tall with lid, 7″ wide with handle, 6 body diameter (across). Weighs about 3 lbs. Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos below. All original and unaltered. The stoneware body has no problems at all, besides some minor firing imperfections. Superb display, lid could use cleaning and/or polishing. Local Pickups Are Welcome!
