Antique German Mold Blown Glass Beer Stein Inlaid Lid withHumorous Scene c. 1870s
Antique German Mold Blown Glass Beer Stein Inlaid Lid with Humorous Scene c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein was made around late 1870s – The body of the stein is made of mold-blown glass with molded ribs for the perfect optical effect and hand-formed applied handle. The lid is inlaid with porcelain insert. The insert is nicely and skillfully painted porcelain miniature showing a doctor and a woman standing at the table with a plate and bottle. The inscription reads: Arzt: Hat Sie appetit? Nun wenn Sie grad was da haben, war mide schon recht, Herr Doctor! ” ” Doctor: Do you have an appetite? Well, if you have something there, it was okay, Herr Doctor! The translation is kind of clamsy. But it looks like the woman only has appetite to the contents of the bottle. The stein has a three-ring open type hinge and a thumblift sitting on the lid – typical for the late 1870s. The stein is in excellent condition with no damage whatsoever, no chips, cracks or repairs. The pontil mark is polished off. Please note – the glass steins are probably the only antique steins that could be used for their original purpose – they could be washed perfectly clean. It’s so nice to have a good brew from about 140 years old drinking vessel! It is 7 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating. Antique German Stoneware Beer Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg Inlaid Lid c. 1870s
Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer – Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg Inlaid Lid c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called “Regensburg” type even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the 1870s. The relief decor on the front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. It was a very common subject for Regensburg steins – a massive figure of the King sitting on a beer barrel and saluting with a stein. The sides of the stein are decorated with ornate hops vine motifs. The lid is pewter with 5-ring closed-type hing and the thumblift sitting on the lid – all typical for the 1870s. There is a porcelain inlay in the lid with hand-painted words: “Zur Erinnerung” – “For the memory”. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are some manufacturing impurities, but they all are part of the manual manufacturing process. Remember, the Regensburg steins of the 1860s – 1870s were not industrialized ware, there were made by hand in small shops. The manufacturing glitches only make these pieces even more interesting. Large and impressive antique beer vessel with over 140 years of history behind it. It is 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Antique German Westerwald Beer Stein Walzenkrug Occupational Brewer Inlay Lid c. This interesting beer stein was made in around 1870s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware – plain and undecorated – with massive pewter lid and a footring. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. It is usually called in Germany “Walzenkrug” or “cylindrical” stein. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of 18th century. The lid is pewter, nicely shaped with ornate thumblift. The open type 3 ring hinge suggests it was made in mid to late 1870s. It is inlaid with porcelain inlay showing a Coat -of Arms with two lions and a barrel with some tools. This is in fact the traditional Coat of Arms of Brewer’s Guild in Germany. The stein belongs to “occupational” category – a highly collectable and quite interesting. The tools are brewer’s tools with hops and barley in the barrel. The inscription reads: “Hoch Liebe die edle Bier Brauerei” – “Long live the noble beer brewer”. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name – V. The lid is sitting pretty tight. The pewter footring show some wear. The stein is large and impressive, standing 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1 L capacity. I guarantee the authencity. Year: 1 870 s. Get images that make Supersized seem small. On one side of the King seats a young woman in ancient Greek garbs holding a bunch of barley with inscription “Die Gerst” (barley) and on another side seats a man holding hops vines with inscription “Hopfenrank” (hops vines). There is also some small script inscriptions I was not able to decypher. Th e lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a depressed cat sitting on a table. I can’t make the the fine script but I know that a cat in German symbolism represents hangover. Leicht – aber fein! ” – “Light – but good! The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some manufacturing impurities, but they all are part of the manual manufacturing process.
