Antique German Etched Beer Stein Bicycle Bike HR Hauber & Reuther 1890 ALL HEIL. Beautiful antique German beer stein/pitcher w. Pewter lid from the late 1800’s. This colorful etched Stein is dedicated to the sport of cycling. It is showing some bikers and it is marked with the slogan. “All Heil” which means “Good Luck” – It is signed FB on top of the door. The stein was made by Hauber & Reuther – Freising Germany- one of the major names of german manufacuturers. The model number is 438. Simply a great piece of sports memorabilia. Good condition with some traces of age – thumb lift with missing piece available – see picture – small damage to stand almost not to be seen when displayed. 8.4 inch tall by 4 in Diameter. Antique German Green Glass Beer Stein High Wheel Bicycle Bike Theme c. Description: Presented is a fantastic antique German beer stein made of bottle-green glass with inlaid pewter lid. The body of the stein was hand-blown of bottle-green glass, stone-cut to create vertical facets engraved with copper wheel to make beautiful flower bouquets ornaments. The pedestal and handle were also stone-cut. The lid is pewter with bronze inlay showing two cyclists on high-wheel bicycles. The inscription above the cyclists reads: “All Heil” – that was the official motto of the sports of cycling in old Germany. It means “All well” literary but was used as Safe travel! The high-wheelers or “penny-farthing” bicycles were common in the 1880s, by the mid-1890s they were mostly replaced by the safety bicycles. Bicycle sports was very popular in Germany in the 1880s – early 1900s. There are many steins featuring bicycles and bicycle societies themes, but glass steins are quite rare among them for some reason. Great glass stein with wonderful theme and in excellent condition. It was manually made using several labor-intensive techniques, resulting in an astonishing piece. It is 9 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. The side panels show Cupids riding the same high-wheel machines. The high-wheelers or “penny-farthing” bicycles were common in 1880s, by the mid-1890s they were mostly replaced by the safety bicycles. Made of saltglazed stoneware with cobalt-blue, green an magenta glazes. The type of the decoration and pewter lids were common around 1890s. Antique German Beer Stein 4F Sports Bicycle Bike Ludwig Jahn R. Hanke #890 c1890s
Antique German Beer Stein 4F Sports Bicycle Bike Ludwig Jahn by R. Description: This antique German beer stein is dedicated to Turnfest – the most popular German sports event in the late 19th – early 20th century. The “4F” logo which stands for “Frisch, Fromm, Froh, Frei” (fresh, pious, happy, free). It was the symbol of the 4F movement that has united the “Turnverein” or gymnastic sports clubs all over Germany into a nationwide movement. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware – the classical German grey stoneware with cobalt blue glaze. The picture on front is the portrait of Ludwig Jah (1778 – 1852), the “father” of German 4F gymnastics festivals, a man who made enormous contributions to popularizing sports activities – he is credited with design of gymnastics bean, parallel bars, vaulting horse, etc. He organized the first 4F sports events that later became so popular. On the side of the stein we can see Putti or Amours playing with barbells and dumbells, fencing swords and other sports attributes. There are also banners with with various sports and patriotic sayings – like Gut Heil! – the official motto of 4F movement. The inscription at the bottom reads: Lasst Kraft uns erwerben mit Herz u. Mit Hand, zu leben u. Zu sterben für’s heil’ge Vaterland. Let us acquire strength with heart and with hand. To live and to die for the Holy Fatherland. The lid is very ornate pewter with a figure of a bicycle rider on top – apparently it was a special order lid for a bicycle sports enthusiast. But most likely it was made by R. Hanke – all the features point to this well-known stein maker. The stein is in a excellent condition. It is 8.5 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. Height: 8.5 in.
