Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. 1819
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful red and gold picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. D and dated 1819. Please note – this is the real date, the stein was made in or before the year 1819. Note the ornate strap support and pewter reinforcement at the bottom of the handle. The stein is in a very good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small cut on the bottom edge that was made for a possible foot ring and no other issues with the body. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom – most likely the decorator’s mark. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age w/some paint wear. Height: 9.5 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Was made to order as a souvenir by Kenny of the 3rd Battalion, 35th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division (Old Ironsides). Stein body / mold was made by Korr from Eberbach, Germany. Face art is the vibrant DUI (Distinctive Unit Insignia) of the 3rd Battalion, 35th Armor with the inscription”Vincere Vel Mori” which translates to Concur or die! Side art features the DUI for the 1st Armored Division and a Bayern crest. Nude silhouette lithophane on the base. “Korr Eberbach – Germany 24 Karat Gold”. Hoping this makes it way back to the unit historian of the 35th Armor or 1st AD, someone with connections to the soldier or soldiers family, or to a military stein collector who will preserve it for generations to come. Kenny, if you’re out there, message me. Historical significance with the present day movement of armor in and out of the region. Thank you for visiting BIG DEAL’S GENERAL STORE!
