Overall in mint condition! This is a beautiful antique hand blown, hand painted enamel amber glass stein. The body has prunts near the base, which seem to almost change color depending on light and the viewing angle – anywhere from a blue to aquamarine to a dark green. The pewter lid has a neat and detailed child/putti holding a chalice thumblift. The central image depicts a crowned eagle Prussian crest. Height: 14.5 tall from base to top of finial. Marzi & Remy Beer Stein Rare Art Deco Starburst Unique Design Vintage 8in German
The firm of Marzi & Remy was founded in the Westerwald town of Höhr in 1879 by Anton Marzi and Simon Peter Remy. By the end of the 19th century M&R employed more than 100 workers and had become one of Germany’s leading stoneware producers. Although it managed to survive two World Wars, the company found itself unable to cope with the rapidly changing marketplace of the late 20th century and was forced to permanently close its doors in 1994. Germans do not commonly use the word “stein” to refer to the beer drinking vessel. In fact, the word “stein” literally means “stone” in German. Historically speaking, the word “stein” used to refer to a beer drinking vessel coming from steinzeng meaning “stoneware” or steinkrug meaning stoneware jug. Some believe that steins were invented during the bubonic plague with hinged lids to keep flies out of the beer. Many steins no longer use lids, nor is the origin story necessarily true. This uniquely colored stoneware jug is decorated in a very unique starburst design reminiscent of the Aztecs (at least to me). It seems to be a one-off, one-of-a-kind beer stein.

Charming mid 1800s German Faience Pottery Pewter Lid Stein w Stag Deer Design. Presented is a charming antique German lidded beer stein, dating to the mid 1800s. This stein is white glazed faience pottery, with a colorful scene on the front of a stag leaping over a fence, with birds in the sky and yellow and pink flowers in the grass underfoot, all done in a charmingly stylized yet distinct style. The lid and foot rim are pewter. This stein has a capacity of a half a liter (500 milliliters/16.9 fluid ounces). This piece is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. The underside of the stein is signed with an incised mark, maybe a letter O or Q. The top of the lid is stamped with a hallmark or maker’s mark we unfortunately do not recognize. The stein stands about 7 1/2 inches to the top of the lid and measures about 4 1/2 inches in diameter at the base, or about 5 3/4 inches from the handle to the front. Large Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Deer Design c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of 18th century. The center of the stein features a stylized urn design, the sides show stylized running deer very nicely and elaborately made. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with an acorn-shaped thumblift – this type of thumblifts was used from 1810s till about 1840. The hinge and the body decorations suggest it was made around 1820s. The stein is in a very good shape – there is no cracks or hairlines in the body. There is a minor chip at the bottom rim and some old pewter repair at the thumblift. This is a rare and very valuable condition for a 200-year-old piece. The lid is engraved with number “18” – this is most likely a tavern number – people in old Germany often keep their personal stein in their favorite tavern. Sometimes the engraved numbers for easy recognition. The stein stands 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Very good with minor issues.
