Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Cornucopia c. 1780s
Antique Early Large Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Cornucopia circa 1780s. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main River in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience with very colorful hand-painted decorations. It shows a basket full of fruit – some sort of Cornucopia that was supposed to symbolize prosperity for the house. It is very nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. There are trees on the sides, very typical for Bayreuth. This type of decor was one of the most popular Bayreuth designs that were dominant in the late years of Bayreuth production. Nice pewter lid with a lip ring and a large hollow ball for the thumb lift, and a foot ring. The lid is engraved with the initials A. Apparently, the stein was engraved sometime after production-the factories in Bayreuth operated from 1716 until around 1788. The stein’s body shows several tight, hardly noticeable from the outside hairlines emerging from the bottom. There are no large cracks, chips, or repairs. The lid is in excellent condition with no dings, tears, or repairs. This is good condition for a beer stein that is about 240 years old-quite a rare occasion! A beautiful antique monumental vessel standing 10 tall to the top of the thumblift. Condition: several tight hairlines. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

It shows floral motifs with a bird as a main subject – nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. 1819
Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful red and gold picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. D and dated 1819. Please note – this is the real date, the stein was made in or before the year 1819. Note the ornate strap support and pewter reinforcement at the bottom of the handle. The stein is in a very good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small cut on the bottom edge that was made for a possible foot ring and no other issues with the body. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom – most likely the decorator’s mark. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age w/some paint wear. Height: 9.5 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting.
