Large Antique German Saltglazed Stoneware Westerwald Etched Beer Stein/Pitcher Unusual Teal Glaze c. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! It is a very traditional type of serving beer steins or “master steins” – large with a bulbous form called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped steins”. The stein is made of saltglazed stoneware hand-turned and manually decorated with beautifully and intricately etched and incised into the body floral patterns. This was done with several kinds of wooden sticks when the clay was still soft. It is also glazed with a very unusual teal color glaze. The lid is pewter with the acorn thumblift and five-ring closed-type hinge with an ornate handle support. This types of hinge and thunblift were the most common from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name: J. There is also a massive footring. The stein is in excellent condition for the age – there are no chips or cracks. There are some minor glaze crazing and manufacturing impurities due to the pre-industrial manual manufacturing technology. It is a large and impressive pouring stein, standing 11.5 to the top of the thumblift, about 2 L capacity. Condition: Excellent for the age. Height: 11.5 in. 1880 Fritz Thenn German salt glaze stoneware figural ceramic beer stein 10+. This stein is a very rare find originating in Regensburg, Germany, in the Fritz Thenn factory. The gray ceramic stein is topped off by an even more rare figural porcelain lid of a young man eyeing an empty stein. The sides of the stein features King Gambrinus, the legendary inventor of brewing, astride a barrel, flanked on either side by personifications of barley and hops. The text roughly translates to Live it up, live with thanks to Gambrinus, barley, and hops. This stein is in fantastic condition for its age, and is a very difficult one to find, so add it to your collection today!

It roughly translates to: “Put your problems out of mind, Don’t worry about tomorrow” or “Don’t worry, be happy”. Nice antique German Stein. 1901 date mark near handle. I believe this one may actually be made the year it’s marked. Good condition except one little glob of what looks like house paint towards top of stein near the handle. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve found a drop of house paint on an item that was likely displayed on a shelf or table against a wall. It doesn’t bother me honestly. The floral design is extra pretty on this one and the characters are executed very skillfully. The work is a bit better than on many I think. There is a short line of poetry on one side. It translates to “With drinking and joking the heart stays happy” roughly.
