An antique Mettlach 1L German beer stein by Villeroy and Boch #2090 entitled “Woman and the Tavern, ” this large stein features a German man drinking and playing cards on the left side, and a woman on the right side with saying in the center. The saying translates to The finer the tavern, the worse for the wife, the worse for the wife, the finer the tavern. The stein has an inlaid ceramic lid featuring a character beer stein. This was designed by famed Mettlach artist, Heinrich Schlitt, and is signed H. Above the saying is a tomcat, which is the German representation or symbol for a hangover. Below the saying, and looking up at the writing is a dog, as if he is reading the saying. This particular stein bears an inscription around the rim of the pewter lid that reads Hickers Handicap Oct 1908 Brooklyn Forest Park Golf Club. Won by Charles Sweeney. The stein has the date mark for 1906 on the bottom and then appears to have been later inscribed in 1908 and given as a first place prize or trophy for the golf tournament in 1908. The stein is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or pewter damage. There is some surface soiling on the body, slight discoloration due to dirty buildup.
