Antique German Saxonian Glass Biedermeier Beer Stein Hand-Blown Stone Cut d. 1840
Antique German Saxonian Biedermeier Glass Beer Stein Hand Blown Stone Cut dat. A classical German glass beer stein from the period of late Biedermeier 1820s – to 1850s. Beer steins made before 1850 fall into the “early” category – they were made in pre-industrial period using manual techniques and old technologies. Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle scrolled. Wide pedestal with large pontil mark. Hollow ball thumblift and large five-ring closed type hinge – all typical for the late Biedermeier period. The stein was hand-blown and elaborately stone-cut to create facets and decorations for a beautiful optical effect. This type of glass beer steins were made in the German state of Saxony in 1820s-1850s. They’re usually called the “wedding steins” because the majority of them were made as wedding gifts – they were expensive, nicely decorated and useful – a perfect wedding gift. The lid is engraved with the intials C. That means the stein was made on or before this date – I guarantee my description and dating. It is marked with pewter markings that belong to Carl Gotthold Breitfeld – a pewterer in Annaberg (Saxony) who opened his shop in 1820 and died in 1869. Excellent flawless condition of the glass, the thumblift on the pewter is bent. Nice very typical beer drinking vessel over 180 years old! I guarantee my dating. 9.25 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1 L capacity. Please note that the glass beer steins are perfectly safe to use for their purpose – to drink beer! Antique German Blown and Stone Cut Glass Beer Stein with Traveling Man Thumblift c. This beautiful and very elegant beer stein was made around 1880s – 1890s of blown glass with attached handle and glass inlaid pewter lid. It is made in a shape of a goblet with a short stem and wide foot and decorated with stone cut facets for great optical effect. The pewter lid is nice and ornate, with the glass inlay also stone-cut to create a diamond-like look. The thumblift is in a form of a travelling man with a backpack, a walking stick and a flask in his hand, very interesting and unusual. The stein is in excellent flawless condition. Please note – the glass beer steins are the ones that could be actually used for drinking – I wouldn’t recommend drinking from antique stoneware or pewter, but antique glass cleans perfectly. Antique Ruby Red German Bohemian Stone-Cut Glass Beer Stein w/Inlaid Lid c. Description: Presented is a beautiful ruby red glass German beer stein with inlaid pewter lid with fantastic decorations created in the late 1860s – 1870s in the German controlled Bohemia (now Czech Republic). The body of the stein is made of hand-blown Bohemian crystal glass with applied handle and large pontil mark on the bottom. It was flashed with ruby-red translucent layer. The glass then was engraved to clear with a copper wheel to create beautiful decorations giving a wonderful optical. The lid is pewter with a matching ruby-red cut glass inlay and the thumblift in form of a feather – a common thumblift for the late 1860s-1870s. The hinge is small five-ring closed type, this type of the hinge was used in the late 1860s. The stein is in excellent condition, with no lines, chips or repairs.
