Vintage Rare 1995 Lidded German Stein King 3991 Edition COA King 703 1L
This is a German lidded stein 13.5 tall. I bought it myself in a small stein shop in a very small village in the Bavarian Alps in Germany. I bought this in 1995 so I know how old and authentic it is. It was made by King handmade and hand painted the edition is A3991 703 1L. The lid is 94% zinc. It was expensive at the time right from the source. Vintage Large Figural Character Thewalt German Beer Stein Gambrinus King of Beer
Here’s a Great Vintage West German Thewalt Limited Edition Figural Character Stein. Overall, it’s approximately 13 and 1/2″ tall and the huge Figural Lid depicting Gambrinus is almost 5″ in height by itself. It’s in Very Good Condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The lid hinge has some play which is expected as the top is very heavy. There’s an inconsequential firing line at the top handle (picture 17) mentioned for accuracy. Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus Humorous Inlay c. 1870s
Large Antique German Regensburg Beer Stein King Gambrinus w/Humorous Porcelain Lid Inlay c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called the “Regensburg” type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. They were produced from the 1850s to the late 1870s. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the mid- to late-1867s. The relief decor in front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. The lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a man in bed with two ladies taking off his nightgown. The inscription reads: ” Er soll alle Stunden 1 Essloffel voll nehmen ist aber vorher erst tuchtig zu schüsseln ” (He should take 1 tablespoonful every hour, but he has to be scooped up beforehand). My German is not that good to understand the humor of it but I guess there is a word play – it’s the medicine that should be scooped, not the patient. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional cobalt-blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some minor firing lines and other small manufacturing flaws – the pottery was mostly a manual job, – but no damage or repairs whatsoever. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with about 150 years of history behind it. It is quite large and impressive – it stands 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity. The stein is circa the 1870s. The relief decor on the front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. It was a very common subject for Regensburg steins – a massive figure of the King sitting on a beer barrel and saluting with a stein. The sides of the stein are decorated relief pictures of young children with hops and barley – they symbolize young Bacchus – the Greek god of drinking and feasting. The inscription below reads: Es lebe hoch es leb’ mit Dank Gambrinus Gerst und Hopfentrank. Long may it live with gratitude the Gambrinus’ barley and hops drink. The lid is pewter with 5-ring closed-type hing and the thumblift sitting on the lid – all typical for the 1870s. There is a porcelain inlay in the lid with hand-painted words: “Zum Andenken” – “For the memory”. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There are some manufacturing impurities, but they all are part of the manual manufacturing process. Remember, the Regensburg steins of the 1860s – 1870s were not industrialized ware, there were made by hand in small shops. The manufacturing glitches only make these pieces even more interesting.
