Mettlach Villeroy and Boch #2008 ca. 1890 Antique Etched German Lidded Beer Stein Inlaid Lid – May God Protect You. This etched beer stein has been made in Germany in 1890 by Mettlach Villeroy and Boch. This stein has been created by F. Stuck and introduce us to poem “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel. Lid has been repaired, it has small hairline, works fine without problem. Second in set of three, with Nos. 2007 and 2009, based on a poem entitled “The Trumpeter of Säckingen”, written in 1853 by Josef Viktor von Scheffel, which tells the story of a love affair between a trumpeter and a baron’s daughter. This model has been made with three lid inlays were interchangeable on this series and may depict either “Jung Werner” (the trumpeter), “der Freiherr” (the baron), or “Margaretha” (his daughter). METTLACH German Loving Pass Cup Beer Stein Mug #2236 Cupid Fan Tobacco Pipe Wine
VERY RARE antique Mettlach loving cup! This particular design (2236) is so rare there virtually no mention of it anywhere online and no photos at all. Kovels is the only site seeming to mention it. They have it described No. 2236, Couple, Musician, Handles, H. When you hear someone say “million dollar view” this was it. Breath taking on a cliff over the ocean with a sprawling vista of a yard. The man if the house worked for European porcelain/pottery makers his whole life it seemed. Based on the office full of paperwork, the word of the estate sale runner, and the thousands upon thousands of pieces of high end porcelain and pottery stuffed in e house it’s safe to say it was true. The estate sale ran for 16 days and there was still enough in the home to run another a few weekends. Previous to that I had never seen a sale go longer than two weekends. Anyways the guy liked Mettlach and had some killer pieces. Now it’s time for it to find a new home. Perfect condition as far as I can see. Cupid is sneakily pouring a love potion into the mans wine glass on one side. His young lady has a Japanese themed hand fan they seem to be sneaking a peak at something behind it that has them both pleased. On the reverse she is serving punch out of a large covered punch bowl while the man smokes his pipe. A musician plays them a mandolin while the rising moon is looking down on them. It’s really a charming whimsical piece. The handles feature a grotesque gargoyle style with leaves around his face. Maybe it’s Greenman but it doesn’t look like him to me, despite the leaves. The paint job is just incredible on this one. It couldn’t have been executed better. It stands 6″ tall and the mouth is around 4″ across. I’ll be listing another Mettlach piece today from another estate. Not quite as rare but a nice lidded Stein from the tapestry series! Please check my other listings.
