Own a piece of history with this antique rare antique Munich Christmas (Weihnachten) 1914 WWI German Iron Cross pewter lid. The stein is in perfect condition with tight, working lid. This is from the 1914 Christmas in the trenches when troops on both sides lay down their arms and celebrated together in peace, played football in No-Man’s-Land, exchanged chocolates and cigarettes and toasted humanity in the face of horrific war. Included in this lot is a beautifully illustrated book detailing this amazing story of human triumph during wartime, with narrated CD and song by noted folk singer John McCutcheon about the 1914 Christmas truce.

With Pausen Munich pewter lid. Stein by Merkelbach Westerwald. Inscription in German wich says: Only permitted to be filled with Münchner Kindl brew beer. 6.6 tall to the top of lid. Antique German Military Regimental Beer Stein Royal Bavarian 1 Inf. Description: Original regimental (Reservisten) stein c. Belonged to Reservist Josef Grundner of 9. Company of the 1st Bavarian Infantry Regiment stationed in Munich in 1898 – 1900. Made of hard porcelain with lithophane in the bottom showing a Portrait of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The front scene shows the regalia of the regiment with a crown and the Coat-of-Arms of Bavaria. The side pictures show scenes of everyday military life. Magnificent figural lid with a soldier standing by the Bavarian Lion, with Heraldic Lion representing the Kingdom of Bavaria for the thumblift. The bottom of the stein is damaged – there is a glued hole in it. It was a custom in some German families to make a hole in the bottom of someone’s very special stein when the owner dies, so nobody could drink from it again. There are many Regimental and also occupational stein with this kind of pierces holes. It is 11 tall, 0.5L capacity. Please note – this is original authentic regimental stein from the period. Munich Child by Mettlach 1/2 liter German beer stein antique # 2767
German ceramic, etched, 1/2 L, inlaid lid. No text on this specimen. By Mettlach – date code 02 = 121 years old. Condition and Description: Overall in excellent condition (pewter strap has slight looseness, though lid sits perfectly flush when left at rest, exactly as pictured). This a fantastic Mettlach stein with great color, tremendous presence and displays incredibly well – an iconic H. Schlitt designed stein to be sure! Height: 9.8 tall from base to top of thumblift.
