Antique handmade German Mettlach painted pottery pewter lidded beer stein mug
Up for sale is a high quality antique lidded German, Mettlach pottery beer stein. It’s sculpted out of thick pottery walls, has a high relief cameo design , and is beautifully painted by hand with figural scenes. The stein has a nice hinged pewter lid with an inset pottery medallion and a large thumb piece. This lovely stein is in great condition and measures 6 inches tall by 5 1/2 inches long.

“Rodenstein Villages & Castle”. German ceramic, relief, 3.8L, castle inlaid lid. The text on the body reads: Pfaffenbeerfurth soll der Hochschul’ sein, mein Durst den Herrn Studenten. Pfaffenbeerfurt (village) shall belong to the university, my thirst to the students. By Mettlach – date code 96 – 128 years old! Condition and Description: Overall in good condition, there are some conditions issues – a couple small touched up base chips visible in pic 4, the pewter hinge is missing the decorative end cap on one side, the inlaid castle lid has been broken and repaired & there are some errant paint specs from when the prior owner painted the room the stein was kept in (damaged/repaired castle inlaid lid shown shown in pics 5-7, the paint specs can be removed with one’s fingernail, I have removed some of the larger ones already – exactly as pictured). This a fantastic Mettlach stein with tremendous presence, great color and displays incredibly well – quite large too with a capacity slightly greater than 1 gallon and weighing more than 8 pounds empty! Antique 1888 METTLACH STEIN No 1794 BISMARCK 1/2 L German Beer stein EXCELLENT. The bottom is marked 1794 which means this classic is called Bismark. The overall condition is excellent for it’s age with no chips, flea bites, cracks or repairs found. The total size is 8.5 tall and is marked 1/2 L at the top. The codes on the bottom, besides the Villeroy & Boch/Mettlach impressed Abbey Hallmark is 1794, 19 and 88. I believe the 88 is the year, for 1888. Below is a cut/paste about this stein from Beerstein website online. Pottery, etched, 0.5L, inlaid lid, signed by C Warth. Otto von Bismarck (1815-98) was known as the “Iron Chancellor” and is generally acknowledged as having been the prime mover in unifying the German states under a single ruler (Wilhelm I) and in the rise of Germany as a great European power. Mettlach #1997 Ehret Brewing pre prohibition beer stein Hell Gate Brewery NYC
George Ehret started the Hell Gate Brewery in New York City in 1866. This Mettlach etched and PUG beer stein features a portrait of George Ehret on the front and has the iconic German brewers symbol on the lid (looks like a star of David, but is a brewing symbol with the letters GE in the middle of it). This stein stands 9 1/2 tall and is 0.5L in size. The sides of the stein have hops, vines and scrolls saying Hopfen u. Malz, Gott erholt’s. The inlay lid has the brewers star and the thumblift is an awesome US shield with stars and stripes an American eagle and E. Pluribus Unum on a scroll at the top. Even the back of the thumblift has a cool eagle design on it!! It is also signed by the Mettlach artist’Hein’ on the stein body near the lower portion of the handle. The bottom is impressed with the Mettlach castle mark, METTLACH, 1997, 12 and 90. 90 is the year made, 1890, making this stein 134 years old – a pre-prohibition beauty! Best of all, there are no chips or cracks! Please see photos – I took all sides, top, bottom and inside. It’s a great stein!

The overall condition is excellent for it’s age with no chips, flea bites, cracks or repairs found. The total size is 9.25 tall and is marked 1/2 L at the top. The codes on the bottom, besides the Villeroy & Boch/Mettlach impressed Abbey Hallmark is 2581, 10, II and 01. I believe the 01 is the year, for 1901. Below is a cut/paste about this stein from Beerstein website online. Pottery, etched, 0.5L, inlaid lid, signed by F Quidenus. This Stein also came with a music box in the bottom but this stein does NOT have that feature. I just picked up a dozen antique steins, mostly all Mettlach, and 2 pitchers as well.
