Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Architectural c. 1750s
Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Architectural Design circa 1750s. Description: Antique German beer steins from before 1850 is a very specific category called “Early”. They are rare, highly collectible, and include beer-drinking vessels from as far as the 16th century to the first half of the 19th. These are the production samples from the pre-industrial era – made by hand with the help of simple machinery. Presented is an early faience beer stein from Hannover-Muenden area. This was a very large faience-producing area in the 1700s – early 1800s. The factory was active for exactly 100 years – from 1732 to 1854. It is well known for the most common decoration motive – a leaping or jumping horse. This, however, is a different subject matter – quite scarce. It shows a view of a country house in a medallion, with the rest of the body painted in magenta color with yellow bands at the top and the bottom. The various scenes in a medallion were the main decoration subject matter in the early years of the factory. Later, at the end of the 18th century, it was for the most part horses, and in the first half of the 19th century, the factory switched to mostly calligraphic inscriptions made in old German script. The background is covered with the “sponge” paint – the magenta color background that was really made with a sponge. This type of background was used by many faience factories in the 1700s. The lid is pewter – very typical for the early years of Hannover-Muenden. It is interesting to notice that the H-M factory made its own lids without using outside pewterers. Their lids are always different from the lids of other factories. The stein is in good condition. There are some minor glaze flakes on the upper rim under the lid, and some extensive glaze crazing, but no chips, no cracks, no repairs whatsoever. This is a very rare condition for a faience item 270 years old. It is quite large and impressive, standing 8.75 tall, about 1 L capacity. This is a historical beer-drinking vessel about 270 years old and in very good condition for its age. I have provided a picture from a German catalog of 2 very similar steins. They were produced a little later than this one and the quality of decoration is way better. But still, it’s a good example of the similar Hannover-Muenden beer steins of the early period. Condition: Very good for the age. Height: 8.75 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Track Page Views With.

Antique German Yellow Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Farmer Occupational c. 1820s
Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Farmer Occupational c. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1820, give or take 5 years. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for its faience work and the best quality pewter lids. This lid alone is a true piece of art from the Biedermeier period of 1815 – 1820s. It consists of a massive ornate lid, a large lip ring, and a foot ring. The lid has a medallion with a relief picture of the tools of the farmer’s trade with the inscription “Gluck und Segen dem Landman” – “Luck and blessings to the farmer”. That means the stein belongs to the “occupational” category – a highly collectible category of the steins made specifically for people of certain professions. The thumblift is made in the form of kissing doves – this was usually done for the steins intended for the wedding gifts. Beer steins were quite expensive at the time and were considered perfect wedding presents. It is safe to say that the stein was made as a wedding gift for a farmer. The stein’s body is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. There is a scratch mark made in the clay that was still wet – it’s number 9, and it’s the capacity mark of 1 1/4 L. The stein has a faint hairline but no other damage or repairs. It is a very good condition for a fragile piece that old. The stein is large and impressive – 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Nuremberg Factory Architectural Motif c. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Nuremberg/Nurnberg in the German state of Bavaria. The faience factory in Nuremberg operated from 1712 till around 1840. The stein was made of faience with hand-painted decorations. The Nuremberg factory employed the best decorators in the country, it was famous for the quality of the paintings and the reason the Nuremberg faience is highly esteemed among the faience collectors. The steins of this shape are called in Germany “Walzenkrug” – “cylindrical stein”. It was painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful and compelling picture with side medallions showing views of a village with a church tower, and other buildings, with bushes and trees. The whole decoration was done in several shades of blue – very common for Nuremberg. I found a very similar stein in an old German catalog (see pics). It seems the same artist decorated it. The artist’s mark is on the bottom – this “P” mark is a known Nuremberg painter’s mark. The stein in the catalog was dated 1780 – I presume this one was made around the same time. Nice pewter a massive foot ring, a lip ring, and the lid with a large hollow ball thumblift. This type of massive pewter mounts were used quite often in the Nuremberg factory beer steins. The stein is in excellent condition for the ceramics item that old. There are no chips, no cracks, no repairs and restorations – a rare thing, the stein presents gorgeously. A large and impressive antique vessel standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden Hunter w/Dog c. The stein was made in the factory of Gmunden – now it’s a small town in north Austria that was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of typical Gmunden reddish clay with tin-based white glaze. It is decorated with hand-painted decorations showing a happy hunter and his dog coming from a fruitful hunt. It was painted with very typical for Gmunden green and yellow colors with magenta outlines. The factories in Gmunden area were producing faience beer steins much longer than the rest of the faience factories in Germany. The majority of German and Austrian faience factories were closed by the late 1700s – early 1800s. Very few factories survived after 1850 – Schrezheim, for instance, and Gmunden as well. The stein has a flat pewter lid with a five-ring closed-type hinge and a small ball for the thumblift – typical for the mid-1800s. The lid shows some pewter repairs on the strap – it might be a substitute lid. There is also a pewter foot ring. The stein is in a very good condition with no cracks or chips – no structural damage. The only repair was done to the pewter. It stands 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1 L capacity. The steins on the last 2 pictures are not for sale, it’s just a sample. Condition: Body excellent, pewter strap repaired (might be a substitute lid). Height: 9.5 in. Title: Antique Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden c. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Antique Early Large Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Cornucopia circa 1780s. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main River in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience with very colorful hand-painted decorations. It shows a basket full of fruit – some sort of Cornucopia that was supposed to symbolize prosperity for the house. It is very nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. There are trees on the sides, very typical for Bayreuth. This type of decor was one of the most popular Bayreuth designs that were dominant in the late years of Bayreuth production. Nice pewter lid with a lip ring and a large hollow ball for the thumb lift, and a foot ring. The lid is engraved with the initials A. Apparently, the stein was engraved sometime after production-the factories in Bayreuth operated from 1716 until around 1788. The stein’s body shows several tight, hardly noticeable from the outside hairlines emerging from the bottom. There are no large cracks, chips, or repairs. The lid is in excellent condition with no dings, tears, or repairs. This is good condition for a beer stein that is about 240 years old-quite a rare occasion! A beautiful antique monumental vessel standing 10 tall to the top of the thumblift. Condition: several tight hairlines. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden Brotherly Drinking c. Hello, my dear customers! I will be out of the country from September 2nd to September 12th. Please keep this in mind! The stein was made in the factory of Gmunden – now it’s a small town in north Austria that was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of typical Gmunden reddish clay with tin-based white glaze. It is decorated with hand-painted decorations showing a merry man waving his hat and holding a beer stein in his other hand. I could not decipher the inscription on the top completely, but it looks like the man is asking his brothers in drinks to drink with him. It was painted with very typical for Gmunden green and yellow colors with magenta outlines. The factories in the Gmunden area were producing faience beer steins much longer than the rest of the faience factories in Germany. The majority of German and Austrian faience factories were closed by the late 1700s – early 1800s. Very few factories survived after 1850 – Schrezheim, for instance, and Gmunden as well. The stein has a flat pewter lid with a five-ring closed-type hinge and an urn-shaped thumblift – typical for the early-1800s. The stein is in a good condition with minor chipping on the upper and lower rims and a couple of short tight hairlines. It stands 9.25 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1 L capacity. The steins on the last 2 pictures are not for sale, it’s just a sample. Condition: Good – see description. Height: 9.25 in. Title: Antique Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden c. Charming mid 1800s German Faience Beer Stein 1L Rearing Horse Scene Pewter Lid
Charming mid 1800s German Faience Beer Stein 1L Rearing Horse Scene Pewter Lid. Presented is a charming antique German lidded beer stein, dating to the mid 1800s. This stein is white glazed faience pottery, with a colorful scene on the front of a rearing horse over a hill, against a blue sky, all done in a charmingly stylized yet distinct style. The lid and foot rim are pewter. This stein has a generous capacity of a full liter (1000 milliliters/33.8 fluid ounces), with plenty of headspace for foam. This piece is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. The underside of the stein is signed with incised initials that look like KZ. Inside the lid are the letter IH (or HI, depending on orientation). The stein stands about 9 5/8 inches to the top of the lid and measures about 5 1/8 inches in diameter at the base, or about 7 ½ inches from the handle to the front.
