Antique Matching Pair of German Glass Beer Steins withPorcelain Inlays c. 1870s
Antique Matching Pair of German Glass Beer Steins w/Porcelain Inlays c. This very impressive and spectacular matching pair of glass beer steins were made around the 1870s. The steins were mold blown to create molded vertical facets on the inside with stone-cut circles on the outside, creating a beautiful optical effect. They were supplied with applied handles and pewter lids with pictures hand-painted over transfer outlines. They show a man and a woman dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes. Very nicely and precisely painted portraits. The glass (and sometimes stoneware or porcelain) beer steins with porcelain inlays featuring beautiful women were quite common. But here we have two identical steins, but one inlay portrays a woman, another one – a man. Most likely, they were a wedding gift for newlyweds – beer steins were quite expensive at the time and were considered perfect wedding gifts. Two beautiful old drinking vessels in excellent condition and historical and cultural significance! The steins are 5.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.3L capacity. Height: 8.25 in. Antique Early German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. 1796
Antique German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany about 200 years ago or more. It comes into the “Early” category – German beer stein manufactured before 1850 – the time of industrialization. Steins made before the industrial age were made and decorated by hand with every piece unique and special. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s – early 1800s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The lid of the stein is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. The inside of the lid shows the pewterer’s marks. The marks belong to Johann Adam Herold (or Herolt) who became a master in 1787 worked in the Bavarian town of Hof in the late 1700s. In fact, half of the pewterers ever worked in Hof had a family name Herold. The other half were Hohenners. I have in my inventory another beer stein fron Hof – it is dated 1836 and is the occupational shoemaker’s stein. The stein is in a very good condition – the pewter is very solid, there are some very minor age-related dings and scratches, but there is no major dents, damages or repairs whatsoever. Please note – the stein is an authentic original pewter drinking vessel from the late 1700s. The maker and the place are properly determined. The stein is 10.25 tall, 1L capacity. Height: 10.25 in. Antique German Yellow Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair d. 1840
Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair dated 1840. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of an early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1840 or earlier – quite often the steins were engraved and dated several years after manufacturing. Schrezheim was very famous in late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. This lid is alone a true piece of art of the “late Biedermeier” period of 1820 – 1840s. There is a spiked prolonged sphere for the thumblift – this is very typical for Biedermeier period. The lid is engraved with initials: A. And dated 1840 – 18 before the initials and 40 after. The lid medallion shows a lady and a gentleman with inscription “Ewige Freundschaft” – “Eternal friendship”. The body of the stein is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. The stein was broken and restored using the Japanese Kintsugi technique – instead of repainting the whole thing and covering the original surface, the repair seams are highlighted with gold leaving most of the stein in original state and creating a wonderful unique appearance. There is a mark on the bottom inscribed in the wet clay, most likely the decorator/glazer initial. The stein is large and impressive – 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity.
