You are ordering this antique, German made, Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach. Mold number 2001 K, known commonly as being part of the Mettlach Book Spine or Book Stein series, with artwork attributed to the famous Mettlach artist, Otto Hupp. Information quoted here draws from the online Beer Stein Library, credit to their site for inlay lid translations and for more information about antique steins and collecting than you could ever hope to learn. Part of a larger, very collectible / desirable, set of 12 Book Spine Steins that are harder and harder to find / assemble in good condition. Fancy, figural, Mercury thumblift. This one was produced in the year 1901. Antique German Stoneware Beer Stein Rare Subject Hunter Funeral Regensburg c1860
Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer Stein Rare Subject – Hunter’s Funeral Regensburg c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called “Regensburg” type, by the name of the region where it was first produced, even though the majority of them were produced in Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze, so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The subject of this stein is quite unusual. It shows a funeral procession of animals instead of humans – deer, foxes, hares, boars carry a coffin, apparently with a hunter inside. The hunter’s horse and dogs are following the procession. This is a very old folk motif – I don’t know it’s exact meaning, but it was a subject of several ballads and old songs. It is usually connected with the humor of reversing roles, but there could be some other meanings, including pre-Christian animalistic motifs. The lid is pewter, with the thumblift made in a form of a heron. The heron with his head down was a symbol of mourning, so maybe the stein was ordered to commemorate someone’s death – some hunter, likely. The inscription on the top is hard to read, but I was able to decipher it. It says: “Ihm ist wohl, uns ist besser” – (He is fine, we are better) The lid is also engraved with initials M. And a picture of a boot. That means the owner of the stein was a shoemaker – which puts the stein into the highly collectable “occupational” category. It is quite possible that he was also a hunter. The stein is circa the 1860s. It has a three-ring open type hinge and the heron thumblift sitting on the lid – typical for the late 1860s. The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other hand – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional cobalt-blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently, resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. Nice and impressive antique beer vessel with over 150 years of history behind it. It is 6.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Height: 6.5 in. Vintage 1952 Usc Tommy Trojan German Beer Stein
VINTAGE 1952 USC TOMMY TROJAN WEST GERMAN BEER STEIN. University of Southern California West German 1952 Beer Stein. This stein features Mudd Hall and Tommy Trojan as well as the USC school crest. The paint, including the gold embellishment is in great condition. Although, if you look at the beer stein from a certain angle with the right lighting, then you. Can see some tiny cracks that I believe are underneath the enamel. In these places, the enamel is smooth. I could only find one chip at the base, just below the word Mudd. It is fairly small – about 1/16 of an inch. There are some other flaws on the beer stein, but they appear to have been there at the time of its manufacture. There are some smudges on the lid, that might be able to be buffed out, but I’m not sure. The lid is also slightly loose, but the looseness does not seem to take away from the integrity of the beer stein. The beer stein measures 8.75″ tall by 3.75″ wide at the base. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Thuringia Rare Turquoise Color c. 1780s
Antique German Faience Beer Stein Thuringia Rare Turquoise circa 1780s. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured around the late 1700s in the region of Thuringia – an old German state located in central Germany. Made of faience with very colorful turquoise glaze that is only associated with Thuringian factories. A fantastically beautiful color that my photograph does not fully reflect. This glaze typical for Thuringian – please see the scan of the late Johannes Vogt catalog with almost identical stein. It is a little older than the stein presented but very similar. Nice pewter lid with a large hollow ball for the thumblift. The lid and the body are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, only some glaze wear on the handle and minor glaze flakes on the upper rim. This is a very good condition for a beer stein that is about 240 years old – quite a rare occasion! It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
