Rare vintage Merkelbach & Wick Beer Stein/Pitcher. Handmade & incised in Germany, Westerwald Region. Grey salt glazed pottery with cobalt blue floral designs. Marked on bottom with M & W. Hard to make out. No repairs, chips or cracks. The item has been displayed in our smoke free home for over 23 years, bought in Germany. 8 1/2 hight to top of pewter lid. We are offering a fine German 0.5L brewery beer stein “Brauerei zum Munchner Kindl” made by Reinhold Merkelbach. This stein is in great condition and has he famous Schutenlieseil bar maid with the target hat. The pewter is the original and is in excellent condition with a ball thumblift. The strap is tight and the tang is firmly affixed to the lid. Hunting and target competitions have always been active sports in Germany. We want you to have a very pleasant experience. Merkelbach Jugendstil/Art Nouveau Beer Stein/Pitcher #1982 by Joseph Hahn c. The artists who worked for R. Wynand, Carl Mehlem, Charlotte Krause, L. Niemeyer and other famous designers and art professors of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil era. Nice form design with ornate relief rosettes in style of Renaissance period stoneware vessels. The stein is made of gray pottery with cobalt-blue glaze. The design of the stein was attributed to Joseph Hahn. The pewter lid is a special Merkelbach lid – there were special types of lids and thumblifts used with Jugendstil stoneware. Excellent condition with no damage or repairs. The design was created in 1903, the stein was made around that time. The stein is very large and impressive – 11.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 2L capacity. Height: 11.5 in. Antique German Merkelbach & Wick Stoneware Beer Stein. Made in Grenzhausen in the Westerwald region of Germany, the mark on the bottom is from the Merkelbach & Wick studio indicates it dates to the period of 1980 – 1921. This is an amazing, beautiful and rare piece of history. It is in amazing condition. Stands 5 inches tall and approx. The fineal at the top is slightly bent back, but could be carefully warmed and moved back. The stoneware mug is in very good condition, no chips or cracks. A similar stein displayed at the 1873 Vienna Worlds Fair (Weltausstellung 1873 Wien) is attributed to F. The Merkelbach & Wick studio was founded in 1872 by Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II (1840 – 1896) and sculptorr Johann Peter Wick (1837 – 1914). The last photos are of the catalog from the fair; the illustration is of a Merkelbach piece that is very similar. Please see all photos as they are part of the description. Antique German Character Beer Stein – Nun by Merkelbach and Wick #270 c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in a shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in a shape of a happy smiling nun. H er head forms the lid. Made of the very tan pottery with pewter mounts. The nun character steins are relatively rare – there were many differ ent monk steins made by various manufacturers in the late 1800 s – early 1900s but only few nuns. The monk (and nun) character steins were very popular in Germany because usually the monasteries and monks were associated with beer brewing and drinking. The stein is m ade of the very traditional pottery with pewter mounts. The stein is in excellent mint condition. It is 7 tall to the top of the head, 0,5L capacity.
