Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair dated 1840. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of an early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1840 or earlier – quite often the steins were engraved and dated several years after manufacturing. Schrezheim was very famous in late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. This lid is alone a true piece of art of the “late Biedermeier” period of 1820 – 1840s. There is a spiked prolonged sphere for the thumblift – this is very typical for Biedermeier period. The lid is engraved with initials: A. And dated 1840 – 18 before the initials and 40 after. The lid medallion shows a lady and a gentleman with inscription “Ewige Freundschaft” – “Eternal friendship”. The body of the stein is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. The stein was broken and restored using the Japanese Kintsugi technique – instead of repainting the whole thing and covering the original surface, the repair seams are highlighted with gold leaving most of the stein in original state and creating a wonderful unique appearance. There is a mark on the bottom inscribed in the wet clay, most likely the decorator/glazer initial. The stein is large and impressive – 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity.
