Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Yellow Bird dat. 1759
Early German Faience Beer Stein Hannover-Muenden Yellow Bird dated 1759. Description: Antique German beer steins from before 1850 is a very specific category called “Early”. They are rare, highly collectable and include beer drinking vessels from as far as the 16th century to the first half of the 19th. These are the production samples from pre-industrial era – made by hand with the help of simple machinery. Presented is an early faience beer stein from Hannover-Muenden area. This was a very large faience producing area in the 1700s – early 1800s. The factory was active for exactly 100 years – from 1755 till 1854. It is well known for the most common decoration motive – a leaping or jumping horse. This, however, is a different subject matter – quite scarce. It shows a bird with yellow body sitting on a chimney pipe. The background is covered with the “sponge” paint – the magenta color background that was really made with a sponge. This type of background was used by many faience factories in the 1700s. The lid is pewter – a very unusual for the period, with a center medallion showing a horse rider and relief decorations along the perimeter. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s name – F. Anna Margreta Hassta and dated 1759. This is the real date – the stein was made in or before 1759. It is interesting to notice that the H-M factory made their own lids without using outside pewterers. Their lids are always different from the lids of other factories. The lid is marked on the inside with the Hannoverisch pewter mark. The stein is in excellent condition. There are some minor glaze flakes on the upper rim under the lid, but no chips, no cracks, no repairs whatsoever. This is a very rare condition for a faience item 270 years old. It is quite large and impressive, standing 8.5 tall, approx. Over 1 L capacity. This is a historical beer drinking vessel about 270 years old in excellent condition for the age. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent for the age. Height: 8.5 in. Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing. Track Page Views With.
