Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein Gmunden Hunter withDog c. 1850s
Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden Hunter w/Dog c. The stein was made in the factory of Gmunden – now it’s a small town in north Austria that was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of typical Gmunden reddish clay with tin-based white glaze. It is decorated with hand-painted decorations showing a happy hunter and his dog coming from a fruitful hunt. It was painted with very typical for Gmunden green and yellow colors with magenta outlines. The factories in Gmunden area were producing faience beer steins much longer than the rest of the faience factories in Germany. The majority of German and Austrian faience factories were closed by the late 1700s – early 1800s. Very few factories survived after 1850 – Schrezheim, for instance, and Gmunden as well. The stein has a flat pewter lid with a five-ring closed-type hinge and a small ball for the thumblift – typical for the mid-1800s. The lid shows some pewter repairs on the strap – it might be a substitute lid. There is also a pewter foot ring. The stein is in a very good condition with no cracks or chips – no structural damage. The only repair was done to the pewter. It stands 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1 L capacity. The steins on the last 2 pictures are not for sale, it’s just a sample. Condition: Body excellent, pewter strap repaired (might be a substitute lid). Height: 9.5 in. Title: Antique Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden c. Get images that make Supersized seem small.
