Antique German Mold Blown Glass Beer Stein Inlaid Lid withHumorous Scene c. 1870s
Antique German Mold Blown Glass Beer Stein Inlaid Lid with Humorous Scene c. Description: This very interesting German beer stein was made around late 1870s – The body of the stein is made of mold-blown glass with molded ribs for the perfect optical effect and hand-formed applied handle. The lid is inlaid with porcelain insert. The insert is nicely and skillfully painted porcelain miniature showing a doctor and a woman standing at the table with a plate and bottle. The inscription reads: Arzt: Hat Sie appetit? Nun wenn Sie grad was da haben, war mide schon recht, Herr Doctor! ” ” Doctor: Do you have an appetite? Well, if you have something there, it was okay, Herr Doctor! The translation is kind of clamsy. But it looks like the woman only has appetite to the contents of the bottle. The stein has a three-ring open type hinge and a thumblift sitting on the lid – typical for the late 1870s. The stein is in excellent condition with no damage whatsoever, no chips, cracks or repairs. The pontil mark is polished off. Please note – the glass steins are probably the only antique steins that could be used for their original purpose – they could be washed perfectly clean. It’s so nice to have a good brew from about 140 years old drinking vessel! It is 7 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating.
