Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Farrier/Horseshoe Smith with Lithophane d. This absolutely fantastic beer stein belongs to the “occupational” family of German beer vessels. It was made for a farrier – a horseshoe blacksmith who was very proud of his occupation. The steins of this sort were quite expensive then and could be compared with the Regimental or Reservisten family of collectible antique beer steins. The stein was made around 1936 of hard porcelain with enameled art and an ornate pewter lid. It was made to celebrate the graduates of the class passing out of the State Farrier / Smithy Class, in Wurzburg, Bavaria from February 15 to June 15, 1936. It is named for Georg Kern and shows a roster with the names of attendees. The stein is decorated with scenes of the farrier’s work – heating the metal, hammering iron pieces, and putting on a horseshoe. The inscription at the bottom reads. Eher soll die Welt verderben als vor Durst ein Hufschmied sterben! The world should come to an end before a Farrier should die of thirst! The inscription in the picture says. ” – “Long live the noble handwork of Horseshoe blacksmith! The stein has a lithophane – a picture in the bottom that you can only see through the light. It shows a tavern scene with a maid and a client. The stein is marked on the bottom with the name M. Bergmann was a glass and porcelain decorator who worked in Munich from 1922 to 1943. He specialized in the decoration of the Military as well as Occupational steins. The lid is pewter with a horse for the finial and a horse’s head for the thumblift – a rare and magnificent pewter work. The stein is in excellent condition – a collector’s.
