This is an old German beer stein, app. 17 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter at base. Marked “Salomon”, on base “390” and on side “3L”. Good condition – no cracks; has general crazing; minor flake to underside; lid is slightly askew & wiggles somewhat; minor wear; see all 12 pics. Items can be picked up in person at our office. LARGE COBALT SALT-GLAZED GERMAN BEER STEIN PITCHER PEWTER LID. This is a nice early stoneware stein pitcher from Germany. It has a very deep relief design with monkeys or orangutans in the trees with acorns at the top. There is also a lizard climbing the tree at the front. The pitcher is grey salt-glazed stoneware with the typical cobalt glaze in Germany. The handle is in the shape of a tree limb. There is a pewter lid. #224 is embossed into the bottom. This is a nice large stein measuring 13-1/2″ tall and 6-3/4″ diameter at the bottom and 3-3/4 diameter at the top. Finial on Lid has figural of Man holding a cup while sitting in a circle of Embossed Berries and Leaves. Multiple Bands of Laurel Wreaths and Scrolled Detail encircle the Tureen. Double Handles feature an Embossed Leaf and Branch design and creates an arch above a Grape Patch. Extending outwards from the Grape Patches are Berries, Leaves, Flowers and Vines in Relief. Cherubs frame embossed panels that contain German Language. Here is a rough interpretation of the words. Words from photo #2… Worriers are worried about life and worry breakers are the vines. Words from photo #6… Color is Deep Burgundy and Green on a Tan Background. 15″ tall x 11″ handle to handle x 7 dia. At opening and 6.5 in dia. Marked with number 281 on bottom. May be other characters present but unable to decipher. Has two spots of crazing on top of lid with some crazing under lid, some staining to interior pot. Otherwise excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.
