Antique German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug Applied Decor c. 1690s
Antique German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug with Applied Decor circa late 1600s. This beautiful stein was made in the late-1600s or very early 1700s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very classic beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s, using manual throwing and hand-created decorations. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The stein is decorated with applied relief bands of stylized geometrical ornaments. The applied relief on Westerwald steins is a clear sign of very early production. There are also some incised decorations in form of hexagrams that were etched into the clay with a sharp instrument. These hexagrams in old Germany were. Associated with beer brewing. The lid is pewter with a 5-ring closed-type hinge, scallop-shaped thumblift and a small spike for a finial. These are also good signs of the late 1600s – very early 1700s production. The stein is in excellent mint condition for the age. There is no cracks or chips that occurred as the result of damage. There is a small clay hollow on the handle and another one on the upper lip see pics. They are glazed over – so it’s manufacturing issues, not posterior damage. There is only some very minor glaze flakes/wear on the bottom rim. The lid is sitting tight and there is no damage to the pewter as well. These are truly excellent conditions for the stein this old. It is 7.5 tall, 0.5L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/minor wear. Year: late 1600s – early 1700s. Height: 7.5 in. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.
