Antique Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Birnkrug Bunzlau dated 1781. Description: In the next few days I will be posting a small collection of three very similar Bunzlau beer steins that differ only in size. This one is the middle in size. Presented is a rare example of early German pottery made around the late-1700s. This high-fired earthenware brown-glazed beer stein was made in Bunzlau – a town in Lower Silesia. In fact, all the pottery production from small towns in Lower Silesia is called “Bunzlau” Every German region and almost every town that was known to make pottery had its own unique technologies and trade secrets. That’s why we can determine where a particular piece was made based on the appearance, style, and type of the pottery. The steins of this kind were called “Birnkruge” or “Pear-shaped steins” because of their pear-like shape They are glazed with glossy lead-based chocolate-brown glaze that was typical (and unique) for Bunzlau. The pewter lid is dome-shaped with a hollow ball thumblift. The pewter foot ring was intended to support the pedestal from chipping, the handle strap supports the handle and is very typical for Bunzlau Birnkruge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials: F. Please note – this is the original engraving, stein was made in 1781 or a little earlier. The stein is large and impressive – it stands 12 tall to the top of the thumblift, with approx. Over 2 Liter capacity. A very similar but smaller stein is featured in Gary Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book” on page 40 pic. The stein is in almost excellent condition, and the appearance is great. There is a small crack in the pedestal that is secured by the foot ring. Otherwise there are no cracks or chips or any other repairs. Some age-related glaze and pewter wear only. This is a fantastic condition overall for a stein over 200 years old. It is very impressive and elegant and a true historical piece that carries almost 250 years of both culture and technology. Antique Jugendstil Art Nouveau Beer Stein Marzi&Remy by G. Partz # 2312 c. This beautiful stein was made by Marzi and Remy around 1905 – 1910. Very typical Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) style. The Jugendstil beer stein of Marzi and Remy were often designed by prominent and famous Jugendstil designers and art professors like Albin Mueller, Peter Behrens, Bruno Mauder, Richard Riemerschmid, Karl Goerig, etc. This particular design is attributed to Gustav Partz (1883 – 1957) – a well-known Jugendstil designer who studied at Dusseldorf Art School under Peter Behrens and became a professor of Art himself in 1920. The stein is made of gray pottery with cobalt blue glaze – the very traditional Westerwald ware. Nice elegant pewter in style with the body design. Vintage German Lidded Beer Steins Ceramic Relief. 5 Liter SET of 2
Set of 2 vintage German ceramic relief beer steins. 5 liters each, with pewter lids. The larger of the two, 0.5 L, of Renaissance Couples features colorful scenes of couples framed by Art Nouveau ornamental motifs, per the Matthias Girmscheid Stein catalog #X16, Pottery, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid. Text: Trinke mit Freuden, halt dich bescheiden. Drink with joy, remain humble. Hin wird das Boot gelenkt wo edlen Stoff man schenkt. The boat will be steered to where noble stuff is dispensed. ” This stein, clean in the interior, has some damage around the concave, 2.5″ deep base and a dent on top of lid. In the wall of the base there is crazing and cracks, but cannot tell if they go all the way through and were repaired–please see photos. Approximate measurements: 8″tall without lid, 11″tall with lid. Base 4 5/8 in diameter. The second stein, the smaller of the two with a flat base, features a beer garden scene in the Della Robbia style of glazed ceramic relief with a dark blue background. According to the Marzi & Remy Stein catalog #2349, ” Pottery or stoneware, relief, 0.5L, pewter lid, text: ” Trinke stets mit Mass und Ziel, nie zu wenig nie zuviel. Drink always with measure and objective, never too little, never too much. This stein appears to be in excellent pre-owned, vintage condition, without any apparent flaws. Approximate measurements: 6.75″ tall without lid, 9.25″ tall with lid. Base diameter 3.75 wide.

Regimental German Beer Stein Mar Martin 103 Garnison Bautzen 1907-1909
This beautiful historic stein is approx 11 1/2 inches tall and is in very good condition. Bottom front is a small chip on the right and a painting flaw to the left. Please see our photos. The majority of authentic German regimental beer steins were produced between about 1890 and 1914. During this time, military service was compulsory in Germany. Most men would take basic training between 17 and 20 and then enter the reserves until age 40. A group of men would enter a unit together, stay in the same unit for training and be discharged as a unit. Rosters of names from your unit, or regiment, could be added to the steins and these became known to collectors as regimental steins.
