You are ordering this antique, German made, 1liter, pewter lidded beer stein in excellent condition for age. Mold number on base is 593. Antique German Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid- Bowling Theme #1087 c. 1900
Large Antique Etched Beer Stein by M. Girmscheid – Bowling Theme #1087 c. Description: Fantastic large antique German beer stein made in the “etched” technique that is usually associated with Mettlach. However, it was made by Matthias Girmscheid – one of the major beer stein manufacturers in early 1900s Germany. He established his own company in 1870 in Hoehr, now – Hoehr-Grenzhausen, the famous Westerwald stein-making area. The stein is made of pottery in an etched technique with hand-painted coloring. The design is quite interesting. The central medallion shows a man with a bowling ball ready to deliver. The side panels show people drinking in a tavern and saluting the bowler. Ein wack’rer Mann der kegeln kann. It’s a brave man who can bowl. Des Kegelspeil gibt Freuden viel. Bowling gives much happiness. The lid is made of ceramics without a framing pewter ring. This is typical for Girmscheid. It shows bowling pins and a bowl with the inscription Alle Neun! , the motto of the sport of bowling. The German version of bowling – Kegeln – was 9 pin game. This is a large stein measuring 10.25 tall with a capacity of 1 L. It is marked with the word “Germany” and model number 1087. The stein is in excellent flawless condition with only minimal paint wear. Condition: Excellent w/minor wear. Height: 10.25 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Vintage German Colorful Lidded Military Monkey Beer Stein Matthias Girmscheid 9
Notice – Through April 10. What a conversation piece this German Military Monkey beer stein would make! This comical, colorful beer stein was originally made by J. It is now made by Matthias Girmsheid. The message on his belly reads. Wie die Raupe vom Schmetterling, stammt vom Affen der Kater. As the caterpillar comes from the butterfly, from the monkey comes the tomcat. To appreciate the meaning, it must be understood that the tomcat (Kater) is both a German symbol and idiomatic expression for a hangover, and that monkeys (Affen), in Germany and elsewhere, are symbolic of drunkenness (monkey on one’s back). In great vintage condition with normal age-related wear. 9″ tall to tip of his hat – 6″ to the rim. 6 wide from front to handle. 3- opening under lid. Would make a great addition to your barware display or for any stein collector. Your item will be carefully packaged to ensure it arrives to you in perfect condition. I strive to photograph each piece to present their unique artistry and condition but reflections/glare are nearly impossible to overcome. If you have any questions about a piece, please send me a message.

Matthias Girmscheid Figural German Ceramic Owl Character Beer Stein Lid No. 740
Pottery, figural, 0.5L. Matthias Girmscheid was born in 1845 to merchant parents and began his working life in the family tradition, opening his own trading firm in 1870 in the town of Höhr. Girmscheid’s manufacturing company began it’s life in 1884 and was apparently engaged initially in the manufacture of clay pipes. It is not known precisely when Girmscheid expanded his operation to include the manufacture of beer steins and related stoneware products, but by 1903 the firm was listed as a “stoneware factory”. In 1920, in what was almost certainly a response to Germany’s difficult post-war economy, Girmscheid merged with the firm of Gilles & Sohn. In 1930, two years following the death of Matthias Girmsched, the composition of the firm changed again. The new firm was called Girmscheid, Michels & Company, and included among its owners: Karl Girmscheid, who had taken over for his father; Simon Gilles, of Gilles & Sohn; and Alfons and Eduard Michels. Following the death of Karl Girmscheid in 1950, the company went through a series of ownership changes, but it continues in operation today, enjoying a healthy business focused principally on the manufacture of traditional salt-glazed tableware and decorative items.
