Antique German Lithophane Regimental Beer Stein Hand Painted & Enameled C 1905
ANTIQUE GERMAN LITHOPHANE REGIMENTAL BEER STEIN HAND PAINTED & ENAMELED – CIRCA 1905. Measures approximately 11″ high by 4 1/4″ in diameter at the base by 5 1/2 deep (front to the back edge of the handle). Excellent condition with the exception of one chip at the base. A ceramic restorer can easily repair this chip. The majority of authentic German regimental beer steins were produced between about 1890 and 1914. During this time, military service was compulsory in Germany. Most men would take basic training between 17 and 20 and then enter the reserves until age 40. A group of men would enter a unit together, stay in the same unit for training and be discharged as a unit. Many souvenir items were available such as pipes, clocks, flasks and especially steins. Rosters of names from your unit, or regiment, could be added to the steins and these became known to collectors as regimental steins. Regardless of what the stein was made of, almost all had pewter lids. The most common sizes are half-litre and one-litre. The beginning of WW I effectively ended the production of regimental steins as labor and materials were diverted to the war. A lot of reproductions of regimental beer stein have been made. This stein has all the features and characteristics of an authentic, original regimental beer stein. I do not see any of the usual signs of a reproduction stein. Antique German Regimental Military Lithophane Beer Stein with Pewter Lid. Approximately 10.5 tall with artistically designed and engraved Lid. This ceramic stein is marked: Field-Art. Wurzburg 1908/10, Reserve Hat Ruh on the lid. A logo is embossed on inside bottom of stein. Pre World War 1. Great detail and colors on this piece. Top of lid had been altered, perhaps shaved down to fit in a display cabinet. One of several in a collection by Long Time Norfolk VA Physician. Obtained by him as a Army Medical Officer in post war occupied Germany, as mementos of his Army Service there during WW2. Old German Regimental Artillery Porcelain Stein Lithophane
Neither of us are experts in steins, but a little research yields this info… Here is what I believe is an Old Regimental Military German or Bavarian Beer Stein with an Ornate Pewter Lid. The owner named was Reservist Gümbel from 5 Bayer Field Artillery Regiment in Landau from 1898-190? It is porcelain with artillery (with canon) scenes and rosters Gümbel’s name appears on the roster on left side… See red arrow in photo.. The pewter lid has a cannon finial and a rampant lion thumblift. There is a lithopane in the bottom and it is about 10.5 tall. In very good condition. Rare Antique German Military Regimental Beer Stein Lithophane w/Lid. Up for offer is a Rare Antique German Military Regimental Beer Stein Lithophane w/Lid. It is in fantastic condition for its age. A few hairlines in the bottom of the stein as shown in the photos. 12″ tall and 4.75″ wide at the base. There is a lithophane on the inside of the stein as well.
