Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Farrier/Horseshoe Smith d. 1936
Antique German Porcelain Beer Stein Occupational Farrier/Horseshoe Smith with Lithophane d. This absolutely fantastic beer stein belongs to the “occupational” family of German beer vessels. It was made for a farrier – a horseshoe blacksmith who was very proud of his occupation. The steins of this sort were quite expensive then and could be compared with the Regimental or Reservisten family of collectible antique beer steins. The stein was made around 1936 of hard porcelain with enameled art and an ornate pewter lid. It was made to celebrate the graduates of the class passing out of the State Farrier / Smithy Class, in Wurzburg, Bavaria from February 15 to June 15, 1936. It is named for Georg Kern and shows a roster with the names of attendees. The stein is decorated with scenes of the farrier’s work – heating the metal, hammering iron pieces, and putting on a horseshoe. The inscription at the bottom reads. Eher soll die Welt verderben als vor Durst ein Hufschmied sterben! The world should come to an end before a Farrier should die of thirst! The inscription in the picture says. ” – “Long live the noble handwork of Horseshoe blacksmith! The stein has a lithophane – a picture in the bottom that you can only see through the light. It shows a tavern scene with a maid and a client. The stein is marked on the bottom with the name M. Bergmann was a glass and porcelain decorator who worked in Munich from 1922 to 1943. He specialized in the decoration of the Military as well as Occupational steins. The lid is pewter with a horse for the finial and a horse’s head for the thumblift – a rare and magnificent pewter work. The stein is in excellent condition – a collector’s. There are no chips or cracks. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian Coat of Arms d. 1833
Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved Saxonian Coat-of-Arms dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblifts before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The stein shows a cylindrical body with nicely and elaborately engraved Coat-of-Arms of of the Kingdom Saxony as it was in the early 1800s – with the black-yellow imperial colored stripes and green diagonal crancelin. Many pewter beer steins made by Saxonian pewterers has Saxonian Coat-of-Arms engraved. This one was owned by a person from Weißenfels (often written in English as Weissenfels) is the largest town of the Burgenlandkreis district, in southern Saxony-Anhalt, central Germany. This cylindrical body with a broad hollow base and tapered lid is associated with the Saxonian pewter tradition. For about 150 years Saxonian pewterers from Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, and other Saxonian towns were making more or less similar pewter steins that were very popular all over Germany from the early 1700s till the 1850s. The lid is engraved with the initials F. Debr and dated 1833. The inside of the lid shows pewter hallmarks. The stein is in great condition – it has some very minimal dings and scratches unavoidable for the soft metal as pewter, but no breaks, tears or repairs – a rare condition for beer steins this old. The stein is large and impressive, it is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Very good – no damage, no repairs, some minor dings and scratches. Iron Cross Beer Stein Westerwald Team
A tribute to the Iron Cross Medal, this beer stein traverses history detailing each version of this honorable medal beginning with the first, created on March 20, 1813. In 1807, after Prussia’s defeat, it was forced into subservience to the French and was unable to break their bond with Napolean until, in 1812 when Napolean was retreating from Moscow, the Prussian army found an opportunity to change sides and allied themselves with Russia. Shortly after, a new medal, the Iron Cross, was created to commemorate the start of the war against Napolean. The silver print against the beer stein’s black, stoneware body creates a stunning contrast. A pewter Iron Cross appears opposite the handle and a pewter German eagle is mounted on the lid. Limited edition of 5,000 individually numbered beer steins Worldwide!
Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Fantasy Creatures dat. 1827
Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Fantasy Creatures dated 1827. Description: I continue posting early Westerwald beer steins from the Schlossmuseum collection in Altenburg, Germany. Beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare. Before the Industrial Revolution, production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand, and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in 1827 or some time before, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer-drinking vessel – a type that was produced for centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The stein is elaborately etched all over the body with stylized images of animals creating a group of fantasy creatures. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument. The stein is also glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired, and saltglazed. The decorations are quite intricate and labor-intensive. The lid is pewter with a hollow ball ribbed thumblift – this type of thumblifts was used throughout the entire 1700s and the first half of the 1800s. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials: F. There are pewter hallmarks on the inside of the lid – see pics. The stein is in good condition – there is a chip on the upper rim under the lid but no hairlines, major cracks, or repairs. The thumblift is slightly smashed. This is a good condition for such an old piece. The inscriptions on the bottom are the museum notes and inventory numbers. They could be easily removed if needed. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: chip under lid, smashed thumblift. Height: 8.5 in. Antique German Yellow Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Farmer Occupational c. 1820s
Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Farmer Occupational c. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1820, give or take 5 years. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for its faience work and the best quality pewter lids. This lid alone is a true piece of art from the Biedermeier period of 1815 – 1820s. It consists of a massive ornate lid, a large lip ring, and a foot ring. The lid has a medallion with a relief picture of the tools of the farmer’s trade with the inscription “Gluck und Segen dem Landman” – “Luck and blessings to the farmer”. That means the stein belongs to the “occupational” category – a highly collectible category of the steins made specifically for people of certain professions. The thumblift is made in the form of kissing doves – this was usually done for the steins intended for the wedding gifts. Beer steins were quite expensive at the time and were considered perfect wedding presents. It is safe to say that the stein was made as a wedding gift for a farmer. The stein’s body is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. There is a scratch mark made in the clay that was still wet – it’s number 9, and it’s the capacity mark of 1 1/4 L. The stein has a faint hairline but no other damage or repairs. It is a very good condition for a fragile piece that old. The stein is large and impressive – 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Antique German Beer Stein, Dorfner & Co, 1 Liter Yelloware, c. 1826-1890
Apparently, Dorfner & Co, had about a 65 year history in 19th century Munich, Bavaria. From 1826 -1883, there were 4 ownership changes, but there were always at least 2 Dorfners out of the 2,3, or 4 partners in the firm. Dorfner & Co’s claim to fame was their ability to be first in developing a nice yellow glaze not being found on German Steins up to that time. Upon close examination, it appears to be yelloware, as the clay being used is also yellow. The young man in the stein is not a knight or soldier, but a worker, as he is wearing a Workmans knife and a leather holster apparently full of keys, as maybe a watchman at the brewery? Translation of saying is, The old Germans always drank one more. There are no chips or cracks, just normal ware for a 200? Year old beer stein. Please inspect all photos to determine condition.
