A large German Westerwald pottery ewer or pitcher with an animal head spout. Elaborately decorated in deep cobalt blue with heraldic imagery and symbols and stamped throughout with leaves, quatrefoils and medallions. Westerwald pottery, or stoneware is a distinctive type of salt glazed grey pottery from the area of Westerwaldkreis in the Rheinland. Salt glaze has a greyish white surface with a texture like an orange peel. It has a pewter lid, a little hairline crack at the pewter handle part to open the lid. The inscription on the front in german”Ein guter trink macht alle jung” translate in english “A good drink makes everyboty younger”.
