Antique German Jugendstil/Art Nouveau Beer Stein Merkelbach and Remy #156 c. 1910
Antique German Jugendstil Art Nouveau Beer Stein Merkelbach and Remy #156 c. This beautiful stein designed in the Jugendstil style – the German version of Art Nouveau – was made by Merkelbach and Remy, one of the small and obscure manufacturing factories in the Hohr-Grenzhausen region of Germany. The factory was established in 1907. It is not very clear which exactly Merkelbach and which exactly Remy were the founders – these families had a large presence in the Westerwald area, It was made around the early 1910s of the very traditional German saltglazed stoneware. The stein has this special round form and the design is made out of repeating elements – that was a popular motif in German Jugendstil beer stein decorations. It is hard to tell who was the artist – the design is similar to several Jugendstil beer stein designers. The lid is pewter with a beautifully engraved initials on the top of the lid: J. The stein is in excellent condition. There is no chips, cracks, repairs or any other damag e. It stays 6 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5L capacity. Early 19 10 s. Antique German Glass Biedermeier Beer Stein Blown Enameled Freundschaft c1840s
Antique German Saxonian Biedermeier Glass Beer Stein Blown and Enameled Freundschaft c. A classical German glass beer stein from the period of late Biedermeier 1820s – to 1850s. Beer steins made before 1850 fall into the “early” category – they were nade w pre-industrial period using manual techniques and old technologies. Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle and large pontil mark. Squeezed-ball thumblift and five-ring closed type hinge – all typical for the late Biedermeier period. Hand-painted and decorated with beautiful enameled decorations using great skills – a true antique art object. This type of glass beer steins were made in the German state of Saxony in 1820s-1850s. The shield on front is inscripbed with gold – the inscription is worn but I think it says “Freundschaft” – “Friendship” – the stein was given by someone as a gift to a friend. The lid is engraved with the intials J. Very good condition of the glass with some age-related wear to the paint. Nice very typical beer drinking vessel over 180 years old! I guarantee my dating. 5.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 0.4 L capacity. Please note that the glass beer steins are perfectly safe to use for their purpose – to drink beer! Octoberfest; The festival is usually held in a place called Theresienwiese (therese field), which is called “D’Waasn” in German for short. The highlight of the festival is beer, and each year the celebration of the festival begins with the Mayor of Munich placing a fountain in a large wooden beer keg. The Germans called this action O’zapft! An Octoberfest beer is brewed specifically for these celebrations. This beer is somewhat dark and strong, both in taste and alcohol. Only Munich brewers are allowed to offer this special beer, and this is done in huge tents called Bierzelt, which can accommodate thousands of people. Antique Faience Beer Stein Birnkrug Schrezheim Factory Floral Decor c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1700s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was made in a shape of Birnkrug or “pear-shaped stein”. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful magenta and yellow stylized floral decorations. This swiveling floral motifs were popular in the 1700s – early 1800s even with the stoneware steins. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge – the typical setup for the late 1700s. The stein is in excellent condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or chips – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small glaze flake on the upper rim see my open lid pic. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. It is 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent w/minor glaze flake. DESCRIPTION Antique Mettlach Villeroy & Boch lidded stein decorated and signed by Heinrich Schlitt. Depicting a 17th c cavalier gentleman in a ruff holding a beer stein in one hand and a tobacco pipe in another. This is a PUG (printed under glaze) which is decorated on the sides with dice, a stein and smoke from his pipe representing the pleasures of tavern life. This piece dates to 1902 as represented by the impressed number 2 on the underside. Marked on the side: 1/2L H Schlitt Marked on base: 1526 1078 Geschutz, Made in Germany Villeroy & Boch Mettlach 2 A fabulous addition to your rare beer stein or vintage barware collection. MEASUREMENTS Beer Stein measures 7″ tall by 5.5″ wide by 4deep and weighs 1lb 7oz. CONDITION This stein is in good condition with some small signs of use commensurate with age. Large Antique Early German Beer Stein Bartmann Bellarmine Frechen c. 1600 1700s
Antique Large Very Early German Beer Stein Bartmann Bellarmine Frechen circa late 1600 – early 1700s. Description: This beer stein is one of the oldest beer drinking vessels. It dates back to the years of late 1600s – early 1700s and was made in the town of Frechen – one of the most important centers of early stoneware production in Germany. The tradition of “Bartmann” or “Bearded man” beer steins began in mid 1400s in the town of Cologne – another important stoneware production center in Renaissance period Germany. It became so popular that every town in Rheinland that was involved in pottery produced their own version for almost two hundred years. There are very similar Bartmann beer steins produced in Raeren, Siegburg, etc. The stein is made of brown saltglazed stoneware. The bearded face was made on a separate medallion and applied. There is also two impressed horse-shoe images underneath that looks like woman’s breasts. It looks like some jokester ordered the impressions for a good luck and also as a naughty joke. The bearded man steins from Frechen are the most classical of all the Bartmann pieces. They were produced for over a century and exported in large quantities to England, Scandinavia and the New World. The stein is in excellent condition for about 300 – 350 years old. Most of the Bartmannskruege are repaired or restored. This one has no structural damage and no repairs and no major cracks. There are some glaze chipping spot in the body and some minor surface crazing. Just very minor age-related wear. Other than that – no problems. This size is larger than usual and the condition is extremely rare. This is a beautiful and very impressive piece that has about 400 years behind it! I guarantee my description and my dating. I hav attached a picture from the late Johannes Vogt beer stein catalog – it shows a very similar stein. The stein very large and heavy is 13.5 tall (34 cm), 7 lb of weight.
