You are ordering this antique, German made, Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach. Mold number 2001 K, known commonly as being part of the Mettlach Book Spine or Book Stein series, with artwork attributed to the famous Mettlach artist, Otto Hupp. Information quoted here draws from the online Beer Stein Library, credit to their site for inlay lid translations and for more information about antique steins and collecting than you could ever hope to learn. Part of a larger, very collectible / desirable, set of 12 Book Spine Steins that are harder and harder to find / assemble in good condition. Fancy, figural, Mercury thumblift. Mercury is the Roman God of Commerce and the God of Thieves, often associated with profit. The inlay design depicts the caduceus which has 2 serpents twined around the winged herald’s staff. This one was produced in the year 1901. The book titles and authors on the body of the stein are turn of the 20th century texts that students of business would have studied / read in their pursuit of operating a successful enterprise. Antique German Mettlach V&B Etched Beer Stein #2886 Politics in a Tavern c. 1907
Antique German Mettlach V&B Etched Beer Stein #2886 Politics in a Tavern c. Made in “etched” technique, the famous Mettlach etched production that made it so famous. The exceptionally crafted etched technique decoration humorously refers to a people discussing politics in taverns. It shows a picture of several men – apparently some notable people – sitting at a table in the tavern, reading newspaper and discussing political news. The innkeeper is standing near. Die Honoratioren des Dorfes, hier sie schwelgen bei Politik und Bier. Den grössten Profit an der Diskussion trägt der Wirt durch die Zeche davon. The notables of the village indulge here in politics and beer. The greatest profit of the discussion goes to the innkeeper, who presents the bill. There is a poster on the wall with the name of a fictitious brewery: “Berl Brau”. It shows a rat chewing on a newspaper. The design of the stein was made by an artist signed “MC”. It is not known in the stein collector’s community who exactly is this artist. He seems to create artwork for several steins including 2886, 2887, 2888 and 2889 – and also 2833A, 2833B, C and D – these are from the same series that illustrates most popular songs of the time. The men on the picture are portrayed with many details – you can notice the clothing details, facial impressions etc. In fact, there are very few Mettlach pieces that show contemporary subject without caricature. The stein is fully marked at the bottom with Mettlach tower mark, mold number 2886 and 07 or the year of production of 1907. The lid is made of pewter – it is different from a more common inlaid lid. There are signs of strap repair – I don’t know if the lid is original or replacement but it is in line with contemporary Mettlach pewter lids. The pewter lids at the time were more expensive than inlaid ones. This lid is a heavy very ornate pewter lid – a work of art by itself. It is engraved with the original owner name: Wilh. The stein is 9.25 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity. The body is in mint condition. Condition: Body mint, pewter strap repair. Height: 9.25 in. Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein withDeer Design c. 1820s
Large Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Deer Design c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from mid-1600s to mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of 18th century. The center of the stein features a stylized urn design, the sides show stylized running deer very nicely and elaborately made. The decorations are etched into the clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with an acorn-shaped thumblift – this type of thumblifts was used from 1810s till about 1840. The hinge and the body decorations suggest it was made around 1820s. The stein is in a very good shape – there is no cracks or hairlines in the body. There is a minor chip at the bottom rim and some old pewter repair at the thumblift. This is a rare and very valuable condition for a 200-year-old piece. The lid is engraved with number “18” – this is most likely a tavern number – people in old Germany often keep their personal stein in their favorite tavern. Sometimes the engraved numbers for easy recognition. The stein stands 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Very good with minor issues. German Mettlach 0.5L Inlay Lidded Beer Stein #2057 Peasant Dance
We are offering a very fine German Mettlach 0.5L inlay lidded incised beer stein with ornate thumbift. This stein is in excellent and are like my other steins is from a very large collection of a longtime collector in Germany. The stein as others listed has been well maintained. The theme is “Peasant Dancer” and the number is 2057. The strap is tight and the tang is firmly affixed to the lid. We want you to have a very pleasant experience. Your satisfaction is our guarantee.
WW1 Imperial German Pioneer Battalion Regimental Stein 1910 Named Chip Great
For sale here is great looking Pre WW1 Imperial German Lidded Beer Stein. This stein appears to be for a Pioneer Company that specializes in port and bridge construction. The lid of the stein features a soldier holding a shovel and an anchor. There is also a lion holding a Bayern shield. The lid also has several long inscriptions on it that seem to say “The Brother pushes the glass, long live the reserve man”, and “The one who has served faithfully has dedicated himself to a full glass”. The stein is unit marked Kgl. Pionier Bataillon 1, Comp. The lower rim of the stein appears to be named to Josef Skieswinner. The painted portion of the stein has a large anchor in the center with the number 3 on it. There are pictures of Kaiser Wilhelm and the Regent Prince of Bayern. There are scenes of the pioneers building a bridge underneath of a zeppelin, and a nearly complete bridge on the other side. Interestingly, there appears to be a full roster that lists Unteroffiziers and Pioniers. Most of the paint is in great condition, and everything is legible and clear. The stein is in great shape with some tarnish to the lid, which appears to be a bit off center when it closes. There is a rather large chip in the bottom just before the J of Josef. Inside, the bottom of the stein has one stain, and there is a great relief of a uniformed officer when looked through. This is a beauty! Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have. Antique Bottle Green Glass German Beer Stein w/Fancy Pewter Mountings c. Description: Presented is a beautiful bottle-green glass German beer stein with fancy pewter mountings. The body of the stein is made of Bohemian crystal glass. The glass was hand-blown and decorated with the thumb-print patters on the inside, creating a wonderful optical effect. It was mounted with a pewter lid and foot-ring/pedestal of exceptional quality. The lid is engraved with a presentation inscription: 1898 Gew. Weitlingen The stein was a gift to a certain Vorst Y. Meyer for singing in the town of Weitlingen in Bavaria. It is dated 1898. The stein is in excellent flawless condition – a collector’s dream. It is 9 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5L capacity.
