German Beer Stein 926 Knight and Landsknecht Drinking
926 – In good to very good condition – No cracks or chips but looks like the lid has a broken thumb opener part. Measures about 8.5 tall. Pottery, etched, 0.3L, with lid. Text: Ob Rittersmann, ob Lanzenknecht, ein jeder gern sein Schoppen zecht. Whether knight or soldier, each gladly downs his portion of beer. Landsknecht were feudal serfs used for military purposes by their master. These “soldiers” were often traded between landowners and were, in a sense, the equivalent of modern mercenaries, with the important difference that they were not free to choose their employer. This is a used item so minor signs of wear should be expected. Any additional notes specific to this item are listed above. This will be packed with care for safe travels. Antique German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein with Floral Decor c. This beautiful stein was made in the late-1820s – early 1830s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very classic beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The stein is decorated with incised drawings of stylized floral design. The decorations glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with an acorn-shaped thumblift and 5-ring closed-type hinge. The close-type hinges appeared in the late 1600s and were replaced by the new open-type ones around the mid-1800s. The acorn-shaped thumblift was mostly used in 1810s-1830s. The stein is in an excellent for the age shape – there is no damage, no chips nor cracks or repairs. There is some minor glaze misfires – a production glitches, not damage, signs of individual, not industrial production. It was probably rarely used and was standing mostly in a closet for 200 years. Antique Bohemian Milk Glass Beer Stein Hand Painted Butcher Occupational c. 1820s
Antique German Bohemian Milk Glass Beer Stein Hand Painted Butcher Occupational c. This unusual antique German beer stein is made of milk glass. The milk glass emerged at the end of 18th century as an alternative to the very expensive porcelain. It was produced until mid-1800. To achieve this porcelain-like opaque look the glass makers used opacifiers – usually bone ash or tin dioxide. The stein was made around 1820 – 1830 in the so-called Biedermeier period. It was hand-blown and hand-painted with lovely subtle enameled floral motives – very stylish and elegant. There is a large pontil mark on the bottom. The mounting consist of the pewter lid with a beautiful and very typical for the late Biedermeier acorn for the thumblift. The lid is engraved with the original owner initials J. And a picture of a bull’s head. This picture indicates that the stein belongs to “occupational” category – a highly collectable type of beer steins dedicated to the profession of their owners. The stein has a hairline that runs from a small chip at the bottom to a side of the stein. There is also a scratch on the other side. The front displays perfectly. Old German Lidded Beer Tankard Stein Beer Mug (10)
Up for sale is an old lidded beer glass tankard possibly from Germany. It looks like a tankard that might have been used in a bar/tavern. I think the lid is made from pewter. It has the number 10 etched into the lid. It measures about 5.25″ high and 3.25″ across the base. It weighs about 1KG or 1000 grams. It is marked/etched on the side 0.30 I think for the volume probably 0.3L. It has very thick glass that has many imperfections/flaws including distortions/striations and air bubbles. There is considerable wear and aging. It has some small chips. I notice two that I have shown in the last photos. There will be other wear/damage that I have not captured. I have not tried to polish the pewter so there is staining and a patina. The lid is a bit loose on the handle causing the lid to move/sit to the left on top of the mug. I mainly sell used older items including antiques, collectibles and oddities so please expect some signs of wear from use.

Mold number 2001 C, known commonly as Book Spines For Philologists or Book Stein for Philologists, being part of the Mettlach Book Spine or Book Stein series, with artwork attributed to the famous Mettlach / German artist, Otto Hupp. Information quoted here draws from the online Beer Stein Library, credit to their site for inlay lid translations and for more information about antique steins and collecting than you could ever hope to learn. Part of a larger, very collectible / desirable, set of 12 Book Spine Steins that are harder and harder to find / assemble in good condition. 2001 C is the Book spines for Philologists. The book titles and authors on the body of the stein are turn of the 20th century texts that students of Philology would have studied / read in their pursuit of a successful career. A philologist is a scholar who is involved in the study of ancient language and literature. Most are employed as professors by universities. They are learned writers, philosophers and historians that translate and extensively annotate the ancient texts of Greece and Rome. The inlay depicts 2 owls; one serious and the other wearing a fool’s cap with bells, holding a fool’s staff in his talon similar to a court jester. The fool, utterly spontaneous and natural, lacks experience but also any trace of affectation. The serious owl represents wisdom attained which has affected his approach to life. At the top of the inlay are the latin words “Scientia” and “Lascivia” (“knowledge” and “playfulness”) and at the bottom are the words Es Leben beide Kauze!!! (Both should exist in life).
