Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein Gmunden Hunter withDog c. 1850s
Antique Early German/Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden Hunter w/Dog c. The stein was made in the factory of Gmunden – now it’s a small town in north Austria that was once famous for faience production. The stein is made of typical Gmunden reddish clay with tin-based white glaze. It is decorated with hand-painted decorations showing a happy hunter and his dog coming from a fruitful hunt. It was painted with very typical for Gmunden green and yellow colors with magenta outlines. The factories in Gmunden area were producing faience beer steins much longer than the rest of the faience factories in Germany. The majority of German and Austrian faience factories were closed by the late 1700s – early 1800s. Very few factories survived after 1850 – Schrezheim, for instance, and Gmunden as well. The stein has a flat pewter lid with a five-ring closed-type hinge and a small ball for the thumblift – typical for the mid-1800s. The lid shows some pewter repairs on the strap – it might be a substitute lid. There is also a pewter foot ring. The stein is in a very good condition with no cracks or chips – no structural damage. The only repair was done to the pewter. It stands 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, over 1 L capacity. The steins on the last 2 pictures are not for sale, it’s just a sample. Condition: Body excellent, pewter strap repaired (might be a substitute lid). Height: 9.5 in. Title: Antique Austrian Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden c. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Antique Early German Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Cornucopia c. 1780s
Antique Early Large Faience Beer Stein Bayreuth Factory Cornucopia circa 1780s. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured in the town of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria, Germany, on the Red Main River in a valley between the Franconian Jura and the Fichtelgebirge Mountains. Made of faience with very colorful hand-painted decorations. It shows a basket full of fruit – some sort of Cornucopia that was supposed to symbolize prosperity for the house. It is very nicely done in some kind of primitive but stylish, traditional 18th-century style. There are trees on the sides, very typical for Bayreuth. This type of decor was one of the most popular Bayreuth designs that were dominant in the late years of Bayreuth production. Nice pewter lid with a lip ring and a large hollow ball for the thumb lift, and a foot ring. The lid is engraved with the initials A. Apparently, the stein was engraved sometime after production-the factories in Bayreuth operated from 1716 until around 1788. The stein’s body shows several tight, hardly noticeable from the outside hairlines emerging from the bottom. There are no large cracks, chips, or repairs. The lid is in excellent condition with no dings, tears, or repairs. This is good condition for a beer stein that is about 240 years old-quite a rare occasion! A beautiful antique monumental vessel standing 10 tall to the top of the thumblift. Condition: several tight hairlines. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Saxonian Coat of Arms d. 1811
Antique Early Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved Saxonian Coat-of-Arms dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany in the early 1800s. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblifts before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The stein shows a cylindrical body with nicely and elaborately engraved Coat-of-Arms of of the Kingdom Saxony as it was in the early 1800s – with the black-yellow imperial colored stripes and green diagonal crancelin. Many pewter beer steins made by Saxonian pewterers has Saxonian Coat-of-Arms engraved. This one was owned by a person fro Weissbach, Baden Wurttemberg. I guess the Saxonian C-o-A on a beer stein was like a symbol of excellent quality – a matter of pride. This cylindrical body with a broad hollow base and tapered lid is associated with the Saxonian pewter tradition. For about 150 years Saxonian pewterers from Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz, and other Saxonian towns were making more or less similar pewter steins that were very popular all over Germany from the early 1700s till the 1850s. The lid is engraved with the initials G. In Weissbach and dated 1811. The inside of the lid shows pewter hallmarks. These hallmarks belong to a pewterer named Carl Moritz Damm who worked in the Saxonian town of Rochlitz in the early 1800s. The stein is in great condition – it has some very minimal dings and scratches unavoidable for the soft metal as pewter, but no breaks, tears or repairs – a rare condition for beer steins this old. The stein is large and impressive, it is 11 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: Very good – no damage, no repairs, some minor dings and scratches. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s. The body is ribbed – that was done to prevent denting. The urn-shaped thumblift was popular in the 1820s – 1840s. I haven’t seen any such thumblift after that date.
