Antique Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Birnkrug Bunzlau dat. 1781
Antique Early German Brown Earthenware Beer Stein Birnkrug Bunzlau dated 1781. Description: In the next few days I will be posting a small collection of three very similar Bunzlau beer steins that differ only in size. This one is the middle in size. Presented is a rare example of early German pottery made around the late-1700s. This high-fired earthenware brown-glazed beer stein was made in Bunzlau – a town in Lower Silesia. In fact, all the pottery production from small towns in Lower Silesia is called “Bunzlau” Every German region and almost every town that was known to make pottery had its own unique technologies and trade secrets. That’s why we can determine where a particular piece was made based on the appearance, style, and type of the pottery. The steins of this kind were called “Birnkruge” or “Pear-shaped steins” because of their pear-like shape They are glazed with glossy lead-based chocolate-brown glaze that was typical (and unique) for Bunzlau. The pewter lid is dome-shaped with a hollow ball thumblift. The pewter foot ring was intended to support the pedestal from chipping, the handle strap supports the handle and is very typical for Bunzlau Birnkruge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials: F. Please note – this is the original engraving, stein was made in 1781 or a little earlier. The stein is large and impressive – it stands 12 tall to the top of the thumblift, with approx. Over 2 Liter capacity. A very similar but smaller stein is featured in Gary Kirsner’s “The Beer Stein Book” on page 40 pic. The stein is in almost excellent condition, and the appearance is great. There is a small crack in the pedestal that is secured by the foot ring. Otherwise there are no cracks or chips or any other repairs. Some age-related glaze and pewter wear only. This is a fantastic condition overall for a stein over 200 years old. It is very impressive and elegant and a true historical piece that carries almost 250 years of both culture and technology. Condition: Excellent with small chip at the foot secured by foot ring. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Dreihausen c. 1840
Antique Early German Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug – Dreihausen c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are usually categorized as “early” – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. It was made in the village of Dreihausen located in Hesse, in the very heart of Germany. It is also located near the historical stoneware production centers of Cologne and Siegburg that produced the first true stoneware in Europe. These brown-glazed “Birnkruge” or “pear-shaped steins” in German, along with many other household stoneware vessels, were produced in Dreihausen from the 13th century to the first half of 1800s. There were about 20 – 30 pottery shops in this small village at the peak of production in the mid-1700s. The Dreihausen stoneware was different from it’s Westerwald counterpart, – it was never salt-glazed. Instead the Dreihausen potters used to dip the already formed pieces into highly diluted loam slip of iron-rich clay that after firing formed this gorgeous shiny chocolate-brown surface. The stein is incised with the name “Rosina” on front – it was done when the clay was still wet before putting the slip. Apparently, it was done on a special order from a customer. The lid is pewter, with the thumblift in form of a sitting young boy – Cupid or Putto – holding a beer stein in his hand. The figural thumblifts appeared in German beer stein production around 1820. However, this is a unique and a very unusual thumblift. I’d like to speculate that the stein was made on a special order as a gift to a lady (Rosina) who just gave birth to a boy. The stein is in excellent condition – there are a couple of very minor glaze flakes – just normal age-related wear, but no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. The stein is 7.25 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 0.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Height: 7.25 in. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. 1820s
Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, around 1820s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It was made in the town of Muskau – on the very East of Germany at the border with Poland. This brown-glazed “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped stein” in German, was very popular during the first half of 1800s. The Muskau factory produced them in large quantities in all kinds of sizes. The Muskauer stoneware was slightly lighter with thinner walls than it’s Westerwald counterpart, but still very sturdy and strong. The stein is decorated with floral rosettes in the central frieze higlighted with black glaze – the distinctive Muskau type of decor. There is also the so-called “chip-carving” decorations between the rosettes. The lid is pewter with the thumblift in form of the sitting crowned lion, and large closed type hinge – the absolute signs of pre-industrial production. There is also a pewter foot ring and lip ring. The lid is engraved with initials J. ” and number “12 – this is the tavern number used to identify the stein in a tavern. Many people in old Germany and even in the modern times kept their personal beer steins in their favorite tavern. The stein is in a good condition – there is a tight line in the neck, but nothing else – no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. That’s a very good condition for a 200 years old piece. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Tight line in the neck, otherwise excellent. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Birnkrug Schrezheim Factory Floral Decor c1790
Antique Faience Beer Stein Birnkrug Schrezheim Factory Floral Decor c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1700s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was made in a shape of Birnkrug or “pear-shaped stein”. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful magenta and yellow stylized floral decorations. This swiveling floral motifs were popular in the 1700s – early 1800s even with the stoneware steins. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge – the typical setup for the late 1700s. The stein is in excellent condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or chips – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small glaze flake on the upper rim see my open lid pic. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. It is 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent w/minor glaze flake.
