Antique German Faience Beer Stein Thuringia Rare Turquoise circa 1780s. Description: Presented is a very impressive and beautiful old German beer stein manufactured around the late 1700s in the region of Thuringia – an old German state located in central Germany. Made of faience with very colorful turquoise glaze that is only associated with Thuringian factories. A fantastically beautiful color that my photograph does not fully reflect. This glaze typical for Thuringian – please see the scan of the late Johannes Vogt catalog with almost identical stein. It is a little older than the stein presented but very similar. Nice pewter lid with a large hollow ball for the thumblift. The lid and the body are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, only some glaze wear on the handle and minor glaze flakes on the upper rim. This is a very good condition for a beer stein that is about 240 years old – quite a rare occasion! It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Antique German Yellow Glaze Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Kintsugi Gold Repair dated 1840. Description: Presented is a fantastic example of an early historical drinking vessels. This beer stein is made of faience. All old German faience could be attributed to a certain town of manufacturing. This one was made in the town of Schrezheim in around 1840 or earlier – quite often the steins were engraved and dated several years after manufacturing. Schrezheim was very famous in late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. This lid is alone a true piece of art of the “late Biedermeier” period of 1820 – 1840s. There is a spiked prolonged sphere for the thumblift – this is very typical for Biedermeier period. The lid is engraved with initials: A. And dated 1840 – 18 before the initials and 40 after. The lid medallion shows a lady and a gentleman with inscription “Ewige Freundschaft” – “Eternal friendship”. The body of the stein is glazed with a beautiful yellow glaze – this is the typical Schrezheim glaze, easily recognizable. The stein was broken and restored using the Japanese Kintsugi technique – instead of repainting the whole thing and covering the original surface, the repair seams are highlighted with gold leaving most of the stein in original state and creating a wonderful unique appearance. There is a mark on the bottom inscribed in the wet clay, most likely the decorator/glazer initial. The stein is large and impressive – 10.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1 1/4 L capacity. Antique Faience Beer Stein Schrezheim Factory Cold Paint Floral dat. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the early 1800s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful red and gold picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for Schrezheim decoration. This is so-called “cold paint” – it was not fired, hence the age-related wear. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials F. D and dated 1819. Please note – this is the real date, the stein was made in or before the year 1819. Note the ornate strap support and pewter reinforcement at the bottom of the handle. The stein is in a very good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small cut on the bottom edge that was made for a possible foot ring and no other issues with the body. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom – most likely the decorator’s mark. An antique German pewter-mounted tin glazed/faience beer stein, circa 1775. Featuring hand painted polychrome florals on pale blue ground. 9.5″h x 4.75″w x 6.25d (including handle). Displays multiple hairlines with some losses, general surface wear with scratches and scattered glaze flakes, dulling and scratches to the pewter, and various production irregularities (including glaze bubbles and pits) – see pictures. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The stein has a pewter lid with the urn-shaped thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge, and a foot ring. This type of pewter mounts are typical for the Biedermeier period of the 1810s – 1820s. There is also an incised monogram in the bottom in the shape of large “y”. It is not a factory mark or decorator’s initial – most likely, a control or other techcal mark The stein is in a relatively good condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. The cold-painted decorations are worn, but it is quite common for this type of decor. There is a triangle-shaped chip in the upper part that was glued back see my detail pic. Other than that, there are no structural issues. The lid is in a good shape without breaks or tears, and sitting tight. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Height: 9.5 in. ANTIQUE German FAIENCE Pewter Lid BEER STEIN Stag Deer Hand Painted 18th Century. Has logo mark stamped in top of lid. Measures approximately 8″ tall (include top of knob on lid) x 4.5″ (at base) x 3.25 (at lip). Condition is used, but good for age. The hand has been repaired and the pewter base has some warping from dents (see photos). Painting is bright and in pristine condition. Antique Faience Beer Stein with Floral Bouquet Amberg Factory late-1700s. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1700s. The stein was made in the Amberg factory in South Germany. It shows all the features of South German faience – the straight top the foot ring sitting on the flared-out bottom. The stein is made with the hard and strong glaze that covers all the body including the bottom – close to creamware. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful picture of a bouquet of flowers – a very common subject for German faience decorations and slightly different for every factory. The Amberg factory was established in 1759. It was producing faience from 1759 till 1795 when it switched to stoneware. The Amberg faience was very close to British creamware – it was fired before glazed, then again after glaze and the third time after being painted. The pewter mountings consist of a pewter lid with five-ring closed style hinge and the foot ring. The lid is engraved with the original owner’s initials M. The bottom of the stein is incised with Amberg factory mark. The stein is in very good almost excellent condition for the faience piece this old. There is no chips, cracks or hairlines – it’s quite rare for faience. There is some minor glaze wear on the handle and no other issues. The lid is in excellent condition and sitting tight. It is large and impressive, standing 9.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Condition: minor glaze wear, bent lid – otherwise excellent. Height: 9.5 in. Antique German Faience Beer Stein Hanau Enghalskrug Delft Style c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1790s. The stein was made in the factory of Hanau – one of the oldest faience factory in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Hanau red clay and glazed with white tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a very simple but beautiful blue decor in Delft style with a house and a fantasy bird. The steins of this shape with a long neck – are called in Germany “Enghalskrug” – “narrow neck stein”. Nice pewter lid with pewterer’s mark on the inside – I was unable to identify it. The small solid ball for the thumblift was often used by Hanau pewterers in the 1700s. The stein has a factory mark “D” incised in the clay in the bottom. Somebody has written “Hanau” with a red pencil as well – that was a later inscription. Beautiful piece of beer drinking culture over 200 years old. There is no cracks or hairlines, just some age-related wear. This is a fantastic condition for a faience item this old. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity.
