Antique German Faience Beer Stein Hanau Enghalskrug Delft Style c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1790s. The stein was made in the factory of Hanau – one of the oldest faience factory in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Hanau red clay and glazed with white tin glaze. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a very simple but beautiful blue decor in Delft style with a house and a fantasy bird. The steins of this shape with a long neck – are called in Germany “Enghalskrug” – “narrow neck stein”. Nice pewter lid with pewterer’s mark on the inside – I was unable to identify it. The small solid ball for the thumblift was often used by Hanau pewterers in the 1700s. The stein has a factory mark “D” incised in the clay in the bottom. Somebody has written “Hanau” with a red pencil as well – that was a later inscription. Beautiful piece of beer drinking culture over 200 years old. There is no cracks or hairlines, just some age-related wear. This is a fantastic condition for a faience item this old. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. Antique Faience Beer Stein Birnkrug Schrezheim Factory Floral Decor c. Description: Presented is an early German beer stein made around the late 1700s. The stein was made in the factory of Schrezheim – one of the largest faience factories in Germany. The stein is made from traditional Schrezheim clay and glazed with a beautiful distinctive Schrezheim blue tin glaze. It was made in a shape of Birnkrug or “pear-shaped stein”. It was then painted by one of the factory decorators who created a beautiful magenta and yellow stylized floral decorations. This swiveling floral motifs were popular in the 1700s – early 1800s even with the stoneware steins. Schrezheim was very famous in the late 1700s to early 1800s for it’s faience work and also for the best quality pewter lids. It was the longest-lasting factory – most of the faience production factories were shut in the early 1800s due to the competition from emerging stoneware industrialized production and cheaper glass production. But the Schrezheim factory lasted well into the late 1850s – early 1860s. The pewter lid has the hollow ball thumblift and five-ring closed style hinge – the typical setup for the late 1700s. The stein is in excellent condition for the faience piece this old. There is no cracks or chips – it’s quite rare for faience. There is a very small glaze flake on the upper rim see my open lid pic. The lid is in perfect shape and sitting tight. It is 8 tall to the top of the thumblift, 0.5 L capacity. I guarantee my description and dating! Condition: Excellent w/minor glaze flake. ° 1800 Faience Antique German pewter footed lidded pear formed Beer Stein Hunter. Great antique faience pewter lidded and footed German Stein ca. Showing a Hunter blowing his horn. This antique Stein dates about 1900 and is still in very good condition without damages. Only few traces of use and age. Pewter is Hallmarked with a Tower with Stars and (i think) a Bear. Faience is signed with a “B”. 10.2″ tall to the top of lid and approx 4.6″ at its widest. Condition – very good with only few traces of use and age! Antique German Faience Beer Stein Architecture Walzenkrug Humpen DETACHED LID
Condition is commiserate with age. Detached lid sits on rim ring properly, just severed where the tang meets the lid. 1.5 pounds empty. Ornate pewter lid with engraved initials and date. Get Vendio Gallery – Now FREE! Antique German Faience Beer Stein – Gmunden w/Religious Theme c. Description: Large antique beer stein made of faience with pewter mounted lid. The stein was manufactured in around 1820s in the factory of Gmunden in Austria. The Gmunden area was the largest faience producing region in the late 18th century – early 19th century. This type of stein is called “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped stein”. There were several different styles of decoration produced by the Gmunden factory. Gmunden area was the majot faience-producing area The earliest example of Gmunden faience in German museums dates back to 1623, but the records show that as early as 1598 there were already established three pottery shops. The factories in Gmunden area were producing faience ware until mid-1800s. This particular beer stein – brown glaze with religious subject painting – was not very common in 1820s. The brown glaze on faience steins was quite unusual and the Gmunden factory produced a few beer steins with religious subjects. The lid is pewter with closed type five-ring hinge and a smaller hollow ball for the thumblift – typical for early 1800s. The stein is in excellent shape for the age – there are some minimal glaze flakes but no major chips, no cracks or even hairlines. The lid and the hinge is in a very good shape. The stein is large and impressive – it is 10.5 tall, 1.5L capacity. Condition: Small glaze flakes, no damage or repairs. Height: 10.5 in.
