Antique German Merkelbach & Wick Stoneware Beer Stein Amazing and Rare
Antique German Merkelbach & Wick Stoneware Beer Stein. Made in Grenzhausen in the Westerwald region of Germany, the mark on the bottom is from the Merkelbach & Wick studio indicates it dates to the period of 1980 – 1921. This is an amazing, beautiful and rare piece of history. It is in amazing condition. Stands 5 inches tall and approx. The fineal at the top is slightly bent back, but could be carefully warmed and moved back. The stoneware mug is in very good condition, no chips or cracks. A similar stein displayed at the 1873 Vienna Worlds Fair (Weltausstellung 1873 Wien) is attributed to F. The Merkelbach & Wick studio was founded in 1872 by Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II (1840 – 1896) and sculptorr Johann Peter Wick (1837 – 1914). The last photos are of the catalog from the fair; the illustration is of a Merkelbach piece that is very similar. Please see all photos as they are part of the description. COLLECTION of 3 Rare German BEER STEINS High Quality Numbered Antique & Vintage
Excellent condition, high quality, beer steins. All with high relief pictures. One has the makers name imprinted on the bottom “Gerz” and the year 1862-most likely this is when they began making ceramics and not the date of this stein. Smallest one is 9″ tall and the tallest is 15″. Made from clay (stoneware), molded then painted by hand and fired in a ceramics kiln. 2 Lids are cast from Pewter and the other is a similar looking silver colored metal. The tallest one is the oldest, undated, but antique. The other two are either Vintage or Retro. NOTES ON INDIVIDUAL STEINS. Tallest one: Small chip on the clay base. Stamped 3 in blind on the bottom; no other manufacturers or numbers that I can see. Medium height: has some wear on the metal lid. Shortest one-stamped “MADE IN GERMAN” and number 4 on the bottom, and it is in excellent condition; it has light cracking on the glaze starting (this begins around 50+ years and can be seen on most old ceramics with a clear top coat glaze). Number 477 is stamped behind the handle and 051 above the handle.

Circa 1900 German Lithopane Beer Stein RARE
Seen through the bottom of the stein. Measures 4 1/2 inches across. The stein itself stands 7 1/2 inches to the top of the pewter lid and almost 9 inches to the top of the thumb piece. I’ve shown left and right images to give you the full German inscription. The porcelain is without cracks or nicks. The pewter lid has some minor denting and mis-shapes. The hinge pin is missing and the lid has been wired to the handle piece. I can identify no “maker’s marks” anywhere on the lid, porcelain or image. I look at this and see a craftsmanship from 100+ years ago that isn’t done today. Sure, lithopanes are still done but not with the care and precision this represents. The artwork is exacting – the fragility obvious. If you have James R. Stevenson’s book Antique Steins, please refer to page 102, item #193a. Many hand-painted steins go for much more, but I have yet to see a lithopane to match this. Those made today have thick clay bases that present no challenge. The light and shadow presented here shows an attention to GREAT detail.
