Westerwald Antique German Salt Glazed Stoneware Lidded Beer Stein Birnkrug EUC
Lovely antique Beer Stein/Birnkrug from the Westerwald Region of Germany. Color is grey with hand incised cobalt blue floral decoration. Pewter lid shows some signs of age & the inside of the lid has some rust. Top of lid is engraved with the name A. 1 1/2 liter capacity. The Birnkrug is pear shaped & shows very few signs of its age but has some minor flaws due to being hand made. No chips, cracks or repairs that we can detect. Pewter lid & ball thumb lift. 10 1/2 to top of lid not including the thumb lift. Please enlarge & check out the photos as they are part of the description. This is a great Antique Salt Glaze Westerwald. It is a 1/2 litre Beer Mug with a fancy pewter lid. I think that the decoration is of contemporary life. There is a banner with writing around the top. Something about hunger and thirst? CRUDELY MADE in a 3 piece mould and Salt glazed on a stoneware body. It is of the type made in some of the many factories in the the Westerwald area of Germany. Antique stoneware lidded Stein/Birnkrug from the Westerwald Region of Germany. Hand thrown, salt glazed & incised. Grey with cobalt blue decoration. Pear shaped with pewter lid & ball thumb lift. Lid is a little loose & the ball lift looks bent. The stein is in great shape for its age but has some minor flaws due to being hand made. No chips, cracks or repairs that we can detect. German Stoneware Beer Krug Stein Gambrinus King of Beers Crown Lid 0.75L 11.75
We are delighted to offer this rare vintage hand painted beer stein which honors Gambrinus, the legendary king of beer; resting on a keg, lifting his chalice and offering a toast. An impressive solid pewter crown figurine sits atop a relief pewter lid. The front panel is framed by stone columns and the sides feature depictions of hops. A hop & leaf border encircles the top and bottom of the stein with a lion and beer mug border below. A poem saluting Gambrinus appears on the right and left panel in German. I made malt out of barley and was first to create beer. That is why the Brewers can proudly claim, it was a King who invented the Beer. It measures approximately 11.8 high x 5 diameter and is in very good gently used condition with a scratch on the rim of the lid. This can be observed in photo #10. Antique German Stoneware Beer Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg withCat Lid c. 1870s
Antique German Stoneware Saltglazed Beer – Stein King Gambrinus Regensburg w/Cat Lid c. Description: This type of very old German beer steins is traditionally called “Regensburg” type even though the majority of them were produced in the Westerwald region. These steins are different from the very traditional Westerwald beer vessels – they did not use cobalt-based glaze so the steins keep natural clay color. In Germany, they call them “Model” steins referring to the method of manufacturing. These steins were press-molded to a wooden form, they were turned afterward to make the insides round, then they were fired and the salt was applied to create the very solid surface. The stein is circa the 1870s. The relief decor on the front of the stein shows King Ga mbrinus – the legendary inventor of hopped malt beer. It was a very common subject for Regensburg steins – a massive figure of the King sitting on a beer barrel and saluting with a stein. On one side of the King seats a young woman in ancient Greek garbs holding a bunch of barley with inscription “Die Gerst” (barley) and on another side seats a man holding hops vines with inscription “Hopfenrank” (hops vines). There is also some small script inscriptions I was not able to decypher. Th e lid is pewter with a porcelain inlay showing a depressed cat sitting on a table. I can’t make the the fine script but I know that a cat in German symbolism represents hangover. Leicht – aber fein! ” – “Light – but good! The stein is in excellent condition – a rare thing for a stein this old. On the other side – this type of stoneware is extremely hard and sturdy. The traditional blue stoneware tends to release inner tensions more frequently resulting in hairlines. The natural color stoneware is usually free of this problem. There are some manufacturing impurities, but they all are part of the manual manufacturing process. Remember, the Regensburg steins of the 1860s – 1870s were not industrialized ware, there were made by hand in small shops. The manufacturing glitches only make these pieces even more interesting. Antique German Gerz No. 866 Lidded Stoneware Beer Stein RARE
Antique Simon Peter Gerz No. 866 German Stoneware Stein. 5 liter stein has a design date between 1880 – 1900. It is cobalt blue and beige in color and is about 10.25 tall. The actual stein is in good condition overall. There is one small chip on the bottom (see photo 10). There is crazing on the inside, top outside and bottom – see photos. On the outside of the stein, above the. 5L mark, there is a small brown dot. There are several more similar brown dots inside the stein and a 1.5 x. 25 line mark (see photos 6, 7 & 8). The lid however; has some serious issues. The lid has a 1 inch bend beginning where it is attached to the lid hinge – see photo # 1. The tip portion of the lid has major damage.
