Larger Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug Incised c. Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the late 1700s, around 1780s – 1790s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel called “Walzenkrug” or “Cylindrical” stein – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the mid-18th century. The center of the stein shows a circular design with a four-point star in the middle. The decorations are incised into the wet clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with hollow ball thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The stein is in excellent shape – there are no cracks or repairs whatsoever. There are some minor flakes on the bottom edge – that’s can be seen as age-related wear. The stein is larger than usual – it is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Excellent w/some minor flakes on bottom edge. Get Supersized Images & Free Image Hosting. Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Occupational Farmer dat. 1809
Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved Occupational Farmer dated 1809. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany about 200 years ago or more. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s – early 1800s. The thumblift is a hollow ball – please note that the hollow balls for the thumblift are a very good sign of authenticity. They never made solid balls for the thumblift before 1850 – 1860 and there are no repros with hollow balls – I guess it is very hard to reproduce. The stein has a pictorial engraving covering the entire body. It show a farmer plowing the land with a horse driven plough and another one planting the seeds. It is also engraved with the words: Ackern und Pflügen ist mein Vergnugen, darum muss ich pfugen. Farming and plowing is my pleasure, so I have to plough. I think there is some word play with the last word “pfugen”, but my German isn’t good enough to be absolutely sure. The stein belongs to the “Occupational” category for the occupation of shoemaker. This is a highly collectable category. The lid is engraved with initials J. This is a typical Saxonian pewter stein with large wide base and raised lid. The inside of the lid shows the pewterer’s marks. The marks belong to Traugott Friedrich Pilz who worked in the Saxonian town of Freiberg from the late 1700s – eraly 1800s. The date “1778” on the mark is the date of the pewterer’s shop established. The stein is in a very good condition – the pewter is very solid, there are some minor age-related dings and scratches, but there is no major dents, damages or repairs whatsoever. The stein is 10 tall, 1L capacity. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

It has a large Saxonian Coat-of-Arms engraved on the front with Saxonian Royal crown and floral de corations on the sides. Beautiful and skillful work of art. The lid is engraved with initials M. It is fully marked with pewterer’s and town marks for Carl Gottfried Klemm jr. A pewterer who became master in 1758 and inherited the shop from his father who established it in 1708 in Reichenbach, Saxony. I have provided a sc an of his pewter touch marks from the E. Hintze monumental work on German pewter marks see my last pic. The stein is in incredibly good condition – it has some very minimal dings but no damage whatsoever – a rare condition for beer steins this old. It is practically impossible to fake the touch marks of a real pewterer from the period. I have been collecting beer steins for many years and I can stand behind my words. The stein is large and impressive, it is 9 tall, about 1L capacity. Title: Antique Pewter German Beer Stein Wlazenkrug Saxonian c. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With.

Antique German Bavarian Pewter Beer Stein Walzenkrug Engraved dat. Description: This very interesting and impressive beer stein was made in Germany about 200 years ago or more. It comes into the “Early” category – German beer stein manufactured before 1850 – the time of industrialization. Steins made before the industrial age were made and decorated by hand with every piece unique and special. It is a so-called “Walzenkrug” – a cylindrical form beer drinking vessel that was very popular in the 1700s – early 1800s. The marks belong to Johann Adam Herold (or Herolt) who became a master in 1787 worked in the Bavarian town of Hof in the late 1700s. In fact, half of the pewterers ever worked in Hof had a family name Herold. The other half were Hohenners. I have in my inventory another beer stein fron Hof – it is dated 1836 and is the occupational shoemaker’s stein. The stein is in a very good condition – the pewter is very solid, there are some very minor age-related dings and scratches, but there is no major dents, damages or repairs whatsoever. Please note – the stein is an authentic original pewter drinking vessel from the late 1700s. The maker and the place are properly determined. The stein is 10.25 tall, 1L capacity. Height: 10.25 in. Antique German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug with Applied Decor circa late 1600s. This beautiful stein was made in the late-1600s or very early 1700s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of gray stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very classic beer drinking vessel – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s, using manual throwing and hand-created decorations. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the end of the 18th century. The stein is decorated with applied relief bands of stylized geometrical ornaments. The applied relief on Westerwald steins is a clear sign of very early production. There are also some incised decorations in form of hexagrams that were etched into the clay with a sharp instrument. These hexagrams in old Germany were. Associated with beer brewing. The lid is pewter with a 5-ring closed-type hinge, scallop-shaped thumblift and a small spike for a finial. These are also good signs of the late 1600s – very early 1700s production. The stein is in excellent mint condition for the age. There is no cracks or chips that occurred as the result of damage. There is a small clay hollow on the handle and another one on the upper lip see pics. They are glazed over – so it’s manufacturing issues, not posterior damage. There is only some very minor glaze flakes/wear on the bottom rim. The lid is sitting tight and there is no damage to the pewter as well. These are truly excellent conditions for the stein this old. It is 7.5 tall, 0.5L capacity. Condition: Excellent w/minor wear. Year: late 1600s – early 1700s. Height: 7.5 in. Get images that make Supersized seem small. Track Page Views With. Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug withHearts c. 1780s
Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Hearts c. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. The center of the stein shows a very nice and intricate decor in the form of a rosette surrounded by hearts. The decorations are etched into the wet clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with hollow ball thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is marked with pewter hallmarks consistent with the late 1700s dating. The stein is in a good shape – there is a very small chip on the upper edge see pic. Followed by a tight almost invisible hairline. The chip is completely covered when the lid is closed. There are also some overfired glaze spots – this is normal for the saltglazed wares of the period. The lid is in excellent shape with some scratches but no damage or repairs to the pewter. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Very good – see description. Height: 8.5 in.
