Vintage West German Pewter Lid Beer Stein Wick Werke Saltglaze Party 15 Tall 2L
This vintage beer stein is from Wick Werke in Western Germany. The earthenware stein measures 15 tall with a 2L capacity. This earthenware stein is pale ivory. The decoration is relief, showing a celebration or wedding. Under the handle is a relief of a mountain home. The predominant background color is cobalt blue with brown and green highlights. The spun pewter lid is made from a single cone-shaped mold with knurling ridges inside. The thumb lift is intricately designed and in excellent condition. Around the base is the motto “Bei Scherz Und Spiel Trink Nie Zu Viel Bei” which translates With joke and play drink never too much. There is a lot of crazing throughout this piece, which I think is because of its age. The base measures 5 ½ diameter and has the Wick Werke insignia. Vintage West German Pewter Lid Beer Stein Wick Werke Saltglaze Party 15 Tall 2L. German Pewter Lidded Earthenware Beer Stein. Wick Werke Western Germany – Saltglaze? 15 Tall 2L Capacity Vintage. Up for your consideration is a vintage beer stein from Wick Werke in Western Germany. This earthenware stein measures 15 tall with a 2L capacity. Earthenware steins range in body color from pale ivory to dark brown; this stein is pale ivory. The decoration is relief, showing a celebration or wedding with couples dancing and a gentleman sitting at a table. The outside is imprinted with swirls, leaves and crosshatching; the thumb lift is intricately designed and in excellent condition. Pewter darkens with age and exposure to the air. The inside of this lid, which is not exposed, has remained shiny and bright. The letters are ivory with a cobalt blue background. The handle is over 6 so you have a good grip while you’re indulging in your favorite drink. It is also ivory with cobalt blue detailing and a swirl where it joins the mug. Above the scene is a border with raised leaves and dots with a forest green wash behind the ivory design. I think the crazing gives it character and makes it more valuable as a collectible — it was definitely not a modern mass-produced beer stein. The base measures 5 ½ diameter and has the Wick Werke insignia impressed in the bottom above the numbers 25 and 8508. Above the insignia is the stamped Made in Western Germany. The firm of Merkelbach & Wick operated from the 1880’s until dissolving in 1921. After the firm dissolved in 1921, the Wick side of the firm continued operation of the factory under the name Wick Werke from 1921 to closing in 1984. Their mark is the W within a W incised on the bottom of this stein. The “Western Germany” imprint dates it from 1949, when Germany was divided. I think this is saltglazed stoneware because of the absence of color used in many of these German steins. This is what I learned. May be decorated with cobalt blue or manganese-violet slip before firing. This process became known in the Westerwald area around the middle of the 17th century. Stoneware steins carry the same motifs as earthenware but are vitrified and consequently more resistant to breakage. The cobalt blue seems to have “bled” into the raised details, similar to flow blue from the 19. I’ve done my best to describe and photograph this beautiful piece of breweriana. I don’t see any nicks, chips or cracks, and the only defect is the above-mentioned crazing, which I don’t think detracts from the beauty.
