Description: This very interesting German beer stein belongs to the family of character steins – steins made in the shape of an object or person. They are also called “figural”. This particular one is made in the shape of a smiling monk wearing his robe. His head forms the lid. Made of the very traditional saltglazed stoneware with magenta glaze and pewter mounts. The stein is in a very good used condition with only very small signs of age and use – please note however a small chip to the peak of the crystal diamond on top of the lid. Antique circa 1890-WWI German Artillery Regimental Stein Lithophane Porcelain Pewter Lid. For your consideration is a very interesting German regimental military tribute stain with pewter lid. The cannon figurine at the lid’s finial suggests artillery, as well as the logo and the scenes in relief at the border. Fine porcelain body with lithophane bottom depicting a family scene, possibly before a battle farewell, the woman holds a handkerchief, the man is in uniform. An array of colorful hand tinted transfer scenes are featuring the regiment glory. Gothic text in German gives additional details, as well as lists the names of the soldiers. The coats of arms in the center bears the number 47. The 47th (2nd Kurhessian) Field Artillery Imperial German Regiment was raised in 1899. 12.5″ tall overall x 5″ wide with handle x 5.75 base diameter. Weighs about 2 lbs. The thumbpiece is missing. Surface craquelure / hairline at the base of the handle, and a minor one at the bottom, both not showing to the other side of the surface. Local Pickups Are Welcome! Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. 1820s
Antique Early German Saltglazed Stoneware Beer Stein Birnkrug Muskau c. Description: The beer steins made before 1850s are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the early 1800s, around 1820s, it is guaranteed old give ot take 10 years. It was made in the town of Muskau – on the very East of Germany at the border with Poland. This brown-glazed “Birnkrug” or “pear-shaped stein” in German, was very popular during the first half of 1800s. The Muskau factory produced them in large quantities in all kinds of sizes. The Muskauer stoneware was slightly lighter with thinner walls than it’s Westerwald counterpart, but still very sturdy and strong. The stein is decorated with floral rosettes in the central frieze higlighted with black glaze – the distinctive Muskau type of decor. There is also the so-called “chip-carving” decorations between the rosettes. The lid is pewter with the thumblift in form of the sitting crowned lion, and large closed type hinge – the absolute signs of pre-industrial production. There is also a pewter foot ring and lip ring. The lid is engraved with initials J. ” and number “12 – this is the tavern number used to identify the stein in a tavern. Many people in old Germany and even in the modern times kept their personal beer steins in their favorite tavern. The stein is in a good condition – there is a tight line in the neck, but nothing else – no chips or cracks, the pewter is in excellent shape. That’s a very good condition for a 200 years old piece. The stein is 10 tall to the top of the thumblift, about 1.5L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Tight line in the neck, otherwise excellent. ANTIQUE German FAIENCE Pewter Lid BEER STEIN Stag Deer Hand Painted 18th Century. Has logo mark stamped in top of lid. Measures approximately 8″ tall (include top of knob on lid) x 4.5″ (at base) x 3.25 (at lip). Condition is used, but good for age. The hand has been repaired and the pewter base has some warping from dents (see photos). Painting is bright and in pristine condition. Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug withHearts c. 1780s
Antique Early German Westerwald Stoneware Beer Stein Walzenkrug w/Hearts c. Description: The beer steins made before 1800 are quite rare – at that time, before the industrial revolution, the production was all manual. Every stein made in the early period was unique, decorated by hand and rarely replicated. This beautiful stein was made in the late 1700s, around 1780s – 1790s, it is guaranteed old give or take 10 years. It is made in a very traditional style of grey stoneware with cobalt-blue glaze. This is a very traditional beer drinking vessel called “Walzenkrug” or “Cylindrical” stein – a type that was produced for over centuries, from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s. The production of saltglazed stoneware beer steins in the Westerwald region of Germany reached the highest quality by the mid-18th century. The center of the stein shows a very nice and intricate decor in the form of a rosette surrounded by hearts. The decorations are etched into the wet clay with a sharp instrument, glazed with cobalt-blue glaze, fired and saltglazed. The lid is pewter with hollow ball thumblift and large 5-ring closed type hinge. The lid is marked with pewter hallmarks consistent with the late 1700s dating. The stein is in a good shape – there is a very small chip on the upper edge see pic. Followed by a tight almost invisible hairline. The chip is completely covered when the lid is closed. There are also some overfired glaze spots – this is normal for the saltglazed wares of the period. The lid is in excellent shape with some scratches but no damage or repairs to the pewter. The stein is 8.5 tall to the top of the thumblift, 1L capacity. I guarantee the authenticity. Condition: Very good – see description. Height: 8.5 in.
