Antique German Beer Stein by Marzi/Remy Etched Renaissance Riders #1621 c. 1900
Antique German Beer Stein by Marzi and Remy Etched Renaissance Riders Farewell #1621 c. Description: This old stein was made by Marzi and Remy – one of the oldest and and famous stein-making factories located in Hohr-Grenzhausen. The stein was manufactured in the lat e 189 0s – early 1900s and is made in the “etched” technique – the contours of the drawing look like they are engraved – thus creating a very attractive decoration. The etched technique is usually associated with Mettlach stein but there were some other manufacturers that used this technology. It was very labor-intensive and expensive but produced excellent results. Etched Marzi and Remy steins are not so very common. The inscription reads: “Es ritten drei Reiter zum Thore hinaus” (Three horsemen rode out to the gate). These are the words from an old German song to the music of Franz Schubert dating back to the 1820s. The stein has a beautiful pewter lid with an etched ceramic inlay showing a portrait of a lady, and thumblift in the form of a jester. The stein is 9.5 tall to the top of the finial, 0.5 L capacity. Very nice and impressive drinking vessel. Excellent flawless condition – absolute collector’s dream. Year: early 19 00 s. Maker: Marzi and Remy. Height: 9.5 in. German Regimental Beer Stein 1900-1903 Regt 2 Chev Bezold Rare Saddle Thumb Lift
It is a rather rare find. This beautiful stein is approximately 11 1/2 inches tall and is in very good condition. We have included photos of our store showcase that has all our available steins. The majority of authentic German regimental beer steins were produced between about 1890 and 1914. During this time, military service was compulsory in Germany. Most men would take basic training between 17 and 20 and then enter the reserves until age 40. A group of men would enter a unit together, stay in the same unit for training and be discharged as a unit. Rosters of names from your unit, or regiment, could be added to the steins and these became known to collectors as regimental steins. The beginning of WW I effectively ended the production of regimental steins as labor and materials were diverted to the war. We are Gannon’s Antiques and Art in Fort Myers, Florida.
