View of Lithophane through bottom of stein. Lion of Lucerne Scroll – Included. ONE OF A KIND! This will come with a beautiful History scroll with a picture of the actual Lion of Luzern/Lucerne. Up for your consideration is this very rare antique Lion of Lucerne/Luzern German beer stein. Fine porcelain body features a hand-tinted transfer of the famous Lion of Luzern/Lucerne Lion. The Lion of Lucerne is a sculpture of a lion carved out of a rock wall by Lukas Ahorn. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the early 1800’s to commemorate the Swiss Guards that were killed during the French Revolution in 1792. The monument and this depiction bear the words. “HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI”. Which translate as “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss”. The dying lion has a broken spear protruding from his side while resting on broken spears surrounding the Swiss battle shield. The front top above the Lion are the words. The ornate pewter lid is extremely rare and beautiful! It features a pewter vine relief in the shape of a LION’s face on the front! The vines making up his beautiful mane with his piercing eyes and an open mouth. The top features a classic acorn finial. The handle thumblift is just as striking in the same pewter relief leaf design. The inside of the pewter lid is lighter in color which indicates its authenticity as it is less exposed to air that ages the pewter design. This is highly desirable in these Beer Steins. The porcelain handle features a painted leaf design going down the length of the handle. Around the pewter lid are the engraved words/lettering. Grinnerung 5.5.9.3. Next to the Lid handle are: ½. (Best to our translation) This may have been a personal engraving. The Lithophane bottom is depicting a man and a woman enjoying a glass of wine sitting at a kitchen table. In excellent over-all condition commemorates with it’s age. There is a tiny firing mark or age crack mark on the bottom, but not on the inside of the stein.
